'MAGA Hero To Zero': MSNBC Host Predicts Marjorie Taylor Greene's 'Humiliating' Fall

Conspiracy theorist Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) could be facing a “humiliating” fall from grace within her own party, according to MSNBC host Ayman Mohyeldin. “There’s always been a certain level of tolerance for MTG among her congressional colleagues,” he said Saturday. “But now, they are making it known that they are getting sick of her antics.”

Mohyeldin played clips of Republican lawmakers slamming Greene, including Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), who accused her of “dragging our brand down.” Even conservative media is now turning on her, he pointed out.

Greene has been coming under fire from within her own party since threatening to lead an ouster against House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.). If her push makes it to the floor, however, there are reports Democrats could step in to help save Johnson. Mohyeldin said that would be a “humiliating defeat” for Greene and her party.

“So in just a short timespan, Marjorie Taylor Greene has gone from MAGA hero to zero,” he said. “But she didn’t flame out because of her bigotry or extremism and wild conspiracy theories.” Her fellow GOP lawmakers and right-wing media had no problem with any of that, he said. “It’s only when she turned on her own party and threatened their agenda that they decided to put their foot down and actually stand up to her,” he said. “They made their deal with the devil in coddling her. And now, they have to live with it.”

Hope Rises for New Talks on Gaza Cease-fire as Israel Scales Back Demands

Israeli negotiators, offering a hint of hope for negotiations over a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip, have reduced the number of hostages they want Hamas to release during the first phase of a truce, three Israeli officials said on Monday.

For weeks, cease-fire talks have been at a standstill. Now, with the new proposal in hand, a mid-ranking delegation from Israel was planning to fly to Cairo on Tuesday to resume them — but only if Hamas agrees to attend, according to two of the officials. They spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive issue.

Hamas did not respond to a request for comment about whether it would send representatives to Cairo. A senior Hamas official said on social media on Monday that the group was studying a new Israeli proposal.

The American secretary of state, Antony J. Blinken, who was meeting in Saudi Arabia on Monday with Arab diplomats, said the onus was now on Hamas. “Hamas has before it a proposal that is extraordinarily generous on the part of Israel,” Mr. Blinken said at an economic forum in Riyadh. “And at the moment, the only thing standing between the people of Gaza and a cease-fire is Hamas.”

Nicolle Wallace spurs uproar over dire warning: Trump could force me off air if reelected

MSNBC's Nicolle Wallace made a startling prediction on Monday: should former President Donald Trump be voted back into the Oval Office, she and other journalists could find themselves forced out of their jobs.

Wallace's name quickly became a trend on the social media platform X as Americans on both sides of the aisle digested this disturbing take. The MSNBC host made this remark while discussing the recent White House Correspondents' Dinner and a comment from President Joe Biden.

"[Trump] said he wants to be a dictator on day one," Biden told the nation. "He tells supporters he is their revenge and retribution. When in God's name have you ever heard another president say something like that? And he promised a 'bloodbath' when he loses again. We have to take this seriously."

Biden urged his viewers not to discount Trump's comments as mere campaign trail rhetoric. "Eight years ago we could have written it off as just Trump talk," Biden said. "But no longer. Not after January 6th."

EU to probe Meta over handling of Russian disinformation, Financial Times reports

Brussels is set to open a probe into Meta Platforms' Facebook and Instagram as soon as Monday over concerns the company is failing to do enough to counter disinformation from Russia and other countries, the Financial Times reported.

Regulators suspect that Meta's moderation does not go far enough to stop the widespread dissemination of political advertising that risks undermining the electoral process, the European Commission is expected to say on Monday, according to the report, which cited two people with knowledge of the matter. The commission, however, is not expected to single out Russia in its statement and will only make reference to the manipulation of information by foreign actors, the Financial Times reported on Monday.

"We have a well-established process for identifying and mitigating risks on our platforms. We look forward to continuing our cooperation with the European Commission and providing them with further details of this work," a Meta spokesperson said.

The European Commission declined to comment. Dozens of countries, including Britain, Austria and Georgia, will elect new leaders in 2024. The European parliament elections are also due in June.

David Frum: The Plot to Wreck the Democratic Convention

Opponents of the Iraq War gathered to disrupt the Republican National Convention in 2004. Tens of thousands of protesters gathered in New York City; some put the total as high as 200,000. A minority of the protesters disregarded police lines. More than 1,800 people were arrested. Yet the convention itself proceeded exactly as planned. President George W. Bush was renominated, and subsequently won reelection. In so doing, he became the only Republican presidential candidate to win a popular-vote majority in the 35 years since the end of the Cold War. In 2014, New York City paid $18 million to settle the legal claims of people who contended that they had been wrongly swept up in the 2004 convention arrests.

Some radical opponents of President Joe Biden hope they will have better success disrupting the Democratic National Convention in Chicago this year. They imagine they can do to a political convention what they have done at America’s prestige universities. They are almost certainly deluding themselves. Biden’s opponents have based their plans on a folk memory of events in 1968. For The Free Press, Olivia Reingold and Eli Lake reported from an activist planning meeting: “‘Have you heard that the Democratic National Convention is coming to Chicago?’ [a leader] asks the crowd. ‘Are we going to let ’em come here without a protest? This is Chicago, goddamn it—we’ve got to give them a 1968 kind of welcome.’”

In 1968, a poorly disciplined Chicago police force brutalized protesters and journalists in front of television cameras. The horrifying images symbolized a year of political upheaval that smashed forever the New Deal coalition of pro-segregation, conservative white southerners; unionized workers; northern ethnic-minority voters; and urban liberals. A Republican won the presidency in 1968—and then again in four of the next five elections.

Exactly why the utterly self-defeating tumult of Chicago ’68 excites modern-day radicals is a topic I’ll leave to the psychoanalysts. For now, never mind the why; let’s focus on the how. Is a repeat of the 1968 disruption possible in the context of 2024? Or is the stability of 2004 the more relevant precedent and probable outcome?

Putin has lost 450,000 soldiers, 3,000 tanks & vehicles and nearly 500 aircraft in Ukraine, says UK intelligence

Russia has lost an enormous 450,000 soldiers and 3,000 precious tanks in Ukraine, according to a UK tally. The humiliating blow for Putin means Moscow has lost an average of 560 troops a day since he unleashed his bloodbath invasion two years ago. It is 100,000 more than the previous UK estimate shared in February by Britain’s Defence Intelligence. And Russia's losses have surged to 1,300 troops a day in just the last two months.

The eye-watering casualty figures don’t include mercenary groups like Wagner who were famously slaughtered during “human wave” assaults in the meat grinder battle of Bakhmut last year. In December the UK said 20,000 of Wagner's soldiers had been killed and another 40,000 had been injured. The latest figures also don't account for the humiliating “tens of thousands” of soldiers who have deserted Putin's armed forces.

They refer to the Russian soldiers taken out of battle by death or injury at the hands of Kyiv's impressive and resilient army. Armed Forces Minister Leo Doherty also estimates Moscow has lost almost 3,000 tanks – up from 2,000 a year ago. Former Scots Guards officer Doherty said of the latest intelligence estimate: “We estimate that approximately 450,000 Russian military personnel have been killed or wounded, and tens of thousands more have already deserted since the start of the conflict.”

He added: “The number of personnel killed serving in Russian private military companies is not clear. “We also estimate that over 10,000 Russian armoured vehicles, including nearly 3,000 main battle tanks, 109 fixed wing aircraft, 136 helicopters, 346 unmanned aerial vehicles, 23 naval vessels of all classes, and over 1,500 artillery systems of all types have been destroyed, abandoned, or captured by Ukraine since the start of the conflict.”

Ted Cruz's Post-Cancun Attempt To Set Up Special Treatment In Airports Falls Apart

A proposal tracing to Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) that would have offered legislators special treatment in commercial airports has flopped. “At 12:30am we got a new deal on FAA bill—which *doesn’t* include Ted Cruz’s amendment to give lawmakers private security escorts through public airports,” Democratic strategist Sawyer Hackett wrote Monday on X (formerly Twitter). Specifically, the Cruz proposal would have allowed for some such individuals (and family members) to avoid the regular processes of security screening at these airports.

Cruz himself previously faced intensive criticism after he was caught trying to travel to Cancún as Texans — his constituents — stared down a massive winter storm. And it sounds like Cruz’s failed initiative could have kept some legislators out of the public eye at airports, potentially helping avert similar confrontations in the future. The special security would’ve extended throughout covered individuals’ airport trips.

Reportedly, Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) — the top Democrat on the Homeland Security Committee in the House — spurred the implosion of the Cruz initiative. Reporting on statements from a source, the Laredo Morning Times added that the move, if actually enacted, “would have also diverted funding from other security measures, giving several lawmakers pause.”

Cruz is up for re-election this year, with his Democratic challenger for November already set: Rep. Colin Allred (Texas). Some polling has shown Cruz and Allred close, though Texas is known for leaning Republican in some elections, particularly races at the state level. Despite once running against him, Cruz has evolved over recent periods of his tenure into effectively a Trump ally, having even helped lead in Congress the ultimately failed push against electoral votes won by Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential race. Congress eventually certified the full results of the election as presented by the states, further setting up Biden’s currently unfolding presidential term.

Taylor Swift Claims Record Top 14 Spots on Billboard Hot 100, Led by 'Fortnight' With Post Malone

Taylor Swift achieves one of the most record-shattering weeks in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart – surpassing unprecedented heights that she previously set – as she claims the top 14 positions on the survey dated May 4. All 14 songs, led by “Fortnight,” featuring Post Malone, are from her new album, The Tortured Poets Department, which, following the Republic Records set’s April 19 release, blasts in at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Swift was already the only artist ever to dominate the Hot 100’s entire top 10 — thanks to tracks from her last album of all-new material, Midnights, in 2022, led by the collection’s “Anti-Hero.”

Among other new chart feats for Swift, “Fortnight” becomes her 12th Hot 100 No. 1, as she ties for the sixth-most leaders in the chart’s archives; she ups her career count of top 10s from 49 to 59, the most among women; and she charts 32 songs – all 31 from the deluxe version of The Tortured Poets Department plus established smash “Cruel Summer” – on the latest list overall, the most ever in a single week by a woman.

The Hot 100 blends all-genre U.S. streaming (official audio and official video), radio airplay and sales data, the lattermost metric reflecting purchases of physical singles and digital tracks from full-service digital music retailers; digital singles sales from direct-to-consumer (D2C) sites are excluded from chart calculations. All charts (dated May 4, 2024) will update on Billboard.com tomorrow, April 30. For all chart news, you can follow @billboard and @billboardcharts on both X, formerly known as Twitter, and Instagram.

Ron DeSantis Kisses The Trump Ring. You Knew He Would!

Ron DeSantis met with Trump for several hours in Miami yesterday, agreeing to fundraise and campaign for him. But mostly he was slobbering over Trump's ring, right? Via the Washington Post:

Allies brokered the meeting in hopes of a potential détente between the two men, and Trump’s advisers hope DeSantis will tap his donor network to help raise significant sums of money for the general election, the people familiar with the matter said. Like others interviewed for this story, the people spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe private deliberations. The pair met for several hours and DeSantis agreed to help Trump. The meeting was friendly, according to a person with direct knowledge.

Trump and allied groups have lagged behind President Biden and his allies in the money chase. DeSantis has built a wide network of wealthy patrons whose assistance would be valuable in helping Trump try to close the gap, and is popular with some Republican voters who are exhausted by Trump.

Good old Puddin' Fingers! You just knew his "principles" would dissolve in waves of Trump charm. Or intimidation. Hard to say.

Donald Trump Campaign Accused of Spamming People With Unsolicited Emails

Former President Donald Trump's campaign has been accused of spamming people with unsolicited campaign emails through third parties ahead of the 2024 election, including individuals from foreign countries who cannot vote. Some people told Newsweek about receiving "annoying" emails advancing the presumptive Republican nominee's campaign, with one claiming they had been unable to unsubscribe from them.

There was no suggestion that the email activity is a breach of electoral rules. Email lists are often sold or rented to federal candidate campaigns and PACs for solicitation purposes. However, one company sending the emails may be breaching its terms of service by allegedly not allowing a user to unsubscribe. The email activity sheds light on how Trump's team is aiming to reach potential voters.

In response to Newsweek's request for comment, a Trump spokesperson requested screenshots or email addresses of people complaining about receiving unsolicited emails to check if the complainants previously signed up to receive correspondence manually. Newsweek did not comply with the request.

One U.K. citizen who spoke to Newsweek on the condition of anonymity said that since 2020, they had been sporadically receiving "unsolicited emails" from the blog Conservative Intel in support of Trump that they described as "spam." Conservative Intel is owned by email marketing firm Conservative Connector, which according to its Linked-In, provides its clients access to the conservative activist and donor email lists of elected officials and political organizations.
