When Trump came on the scene as a GOP candidate in 2015 I thought it was a joke. I remember thinking, "This clown wants to run for President? Good luck with that pal!" But the media followed him around like a puppy reporting on his every move and his popularity grew. I listened to him brag about how great and brilliant he is and that "only he" can fix this country and I laughed. He made promises that were pure BS and I wondered how people can take him seriously.
Then there was one bombshell after another. The "grab 'em by the pussy" comment I thought would surely take him down but it didn't! He continued on, making racist and cruel comments and his popularity only grew. I was amazed. He proved over and over again that he is an imbecile. Hell he couldn't even spell hamburger (hamberder) for crying out loud. "Prince of Whales" was another gem. He didn't know why the Civil War was fought nor did he know what NATO was for. Sigh. It was embarrassing.
The entire 3+ years he has been in office have been a calamity of epic proportions. He screws up everything he touches and most of his inner circle is in jail or under investigation. To any sane person he is an idiot, a liar and totally crooked.
But yet for 30 to 40% of the population he is the next best thing to Jesus! To them he is a "genius", a "devout Christian" and the "best President in history!" They practically worship him. If he farted, they would rush to sniff it. It's bizarre. I have trouble wrapping my brain around it. WHY is he so popular with part of the population?
Then I realized that there is only one reason that he is so popular with the GOP base. He is an xenophobic racist just like they are which gives them permission to spew their hate in public. That is why they love him. They want a world dominated by straight,, White Christians and they think Trump will give it to them. They love it when he promotes laws that oppress minorities. Yeah keep those Muslims out! Put migrants in cages! Make it legal to discriminate against gays and Trans people! Mock other democracies! We're number one again damn it! USA! USA! USA!
We need to accept the fact that a lot of our fellow American's are authoritarian bigots who would put half of America in concentration camps or kill them if they could.
