By Nadin Abbott
November 20, 2012 (San Diego)Across the nation and in San Diego County, Walmart workers are poised to stage a walk out on Friday, traditionally the biggest shopping day of the year.
This Thanksgiving, Walmart workers at more than 1,000 locations are seeking a seat at the bargaining table.
Unless Walmart takes immediate steps to improve basic working conditions, workers throughout the company's vast operations from factories and warehouses to retail stores will participate in a massive walkout on Friday, November 23," states an e-mail sent by Color of Change.
The reasons are many, but lifting workers out of poverty is a key factor. Wages reportedly averaging $8.81/hour add up to just $15,576/year for a full-time employee.

(24,721 posts)I hope this will cause enough impact to force Walmart to treat their employees better.
Think of how many customers each store has daily, how much the average customer spends, & the store profits must be unbelievably huge. There's undoubtedly enough there to give their employees a good living wage, plus benefits.

As Black Friday Approaches and Strikes Continue to Spread Nationwide,
Washington, D.C. WALMART WORKERS WALK OFF THE JOB
Community Leaders Join in Call for an End to the Attempts to Silence Workers for Speaking out for Better Jobs
Washington, D.C. With building frustration around the unanswered calls to Walmart to stop its attempts to silence workers who are speaking out for better jobs, and its discrimination and punishment of workers who have spoken out, Washington, D.C. Walmart workers walked off the job today.

(83,746 posts)With Wal-mart sorely lacking in crowd control and protection for their employees. They were woefully unprepared for the crazed crowd that they faced.
No protests caused this....it was the greed of Wal-mart. They whipped their customers into a frenzy with the promise of sale sale sale. Are there not laws in place that hold Company's like Wal- mart.
It reminds me of the Jodie Foster movie, The Accused. The men that stood aside and egged on the rape were found guilty of enabling the rape.
Wal-mart is enabling the violence and should be prosecuted if this happens again!

I wish you luck on friday...
Happy Thanksgiving!

If you thought any Black Friday experience you had was beyond ridiculous, just consider yourself lucky no one died (though many people find themselves dying on the inside.)
Alas, that is exactly what happened back in 2008 at a Long Island Wal-Mart. A few facts to convey this incident: over 2,000 people trampled into the store five minutes before scheduled to open. The store never in fact opened. The crowds opened it themselves, chanting push the doors in. And they did, knocking the doors off their hinges and literally basting it apart. If you're wondering what's wrong with these people? Just check out this Walmart people video and it'll all make perfect sense.
It was rumored that the employees all of sudden had to make a human chain to slow down the crowds that kept pouring. Not effective. Turned out the crowds ended up being a lethal Red Rover and they trampled a 34 year old temporary employee.
As other Wal-Mart employees tried to help the man, the crowds knocked them over as well all the while pummeling the downed man to death. When police and paramedics arrived, people kept pushing past them. When police forced the store to close, people kept pushing past them. Their excuse? I was in line since Friday morning! For 20 dollars off a PS3.
You cant get more cold-hearted than that.
Pregnant Woman Miscarried
Well, you can expect this type of violence if the crowds on Black Friday had been historically so bad they killed a man. This particular takedown occurred at the same place where the Wal-Mart worker was killed, making the 2008 shopping season a historical war zone in that area, which will remain unnamed in this article.
The eighth-month old pregnant woman was probably waiting to buy stuff for her soon to be newborn baby. Instead, she miscarried. The same group of people that knocked the doors off their hinges also managed to create the most brutal abortion imaginable.
Source and video that provide a full explanation.
Old Woman Trampled
It seems like the saga of the madness trying to get into the store will never end. On Black Friday in 2005, all the people who waited in lines for hours at a Florida BrandSmart instinctively formed a mob mentality once the store opened and once again used the force of a hundred people to push themselves into the store. There was no mercy shown, especially towards senior citizens. One 73 year old woman was knocked down and back-stepped on again and again and there was nothing her poor daughter could do to help. One wonders if she was so slow when going in people tossed her aside like a rag doll.
Paralyzed
A woman who was second in line to get into a Wal-Mart (note to self: never go to a Wal-Mart again) ended up getting trampled over in the rush to save 100 dollars on a laptop.
The woman herself puts it best, "I saved 100 dollars on that computer. Ive probably spent 100,000 dollars on medical bills." In the rush to get to that computer, the woman sustained a concussion, and back and neck pain.
Now, she walks with a cane, is hooked on prescriptions drugs and has memory problems. The husband called the chaos "Americas Running of the Bulls", except instead of goring, the damage comes from being attacked whilst in a fetal position.

(4,297 posts)The cashiers all looked so scared and weary. I said, "How are you?" and my cashier said, "Fine." But it was so forced. I said, "Have a nice Thanksgiving!" and she said, "Okay. We'll all be here. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. All day. All three days." I told her, "Listen, people out there are learning about this. Public sentiment is starting to turn your way." She smiled for the first time, but then she had to rush into the next transaction. And her smile was so full of fear. I wonder what their management guys had been saying to them. These are all such good workers. Day in and day out, they are cheerful, helpful, efficient. All for $8.81 an hour. Or less. Come on, we can do better for them than this. When I was a child, the local supermarket would be open for only a few hours on Thanksgiving morning. And only for regular hours the next day. This whole Black Friday idea has gotten way out of hand. Maybe we should not be going to Walmart on Thursday or Friday.

(18,625 posts)Either the workers will chicken out or Walmart will put on some kind of pressure to prevent them from doing it.
But it will be interesting to see.
It would make a hell of a statement if they did but I'm not sure Walmart's reaction would be what the want.

(154,021 posts)And I expect a few stores to not do it. But we have had walk ours and other actions already.
I have also talked to workers who work at warehouses, and the conditions are horrific.
For the record, I am not the only one to notice, there are more labor stories than there used to be. I call this birth pains for a new labor movement. I hope this is not as painful as the previous one.
