(70,351 posts)I really wish more research--and money would go into Cancer research. I do not wish that on anyone.

(102,419 posts)This was his "preordained" life that he prepared for every day of his life. So for it to potentially end this soon after assuming the throne is hard for me not to feel and extend some compassion. And I'm no monarchist.

Technically, Louis XIV had a longer reign (72 years, 110 days), but he was only four when he acceded to the throne, thus had regents (mother and Cardinal Mazarin) for his first 9 years. QEII became queen when she was 25, so her reign was technically the longest as a fully invested monarch.

Sounds like projection, imo. As other posters said, she made that vow to serve her whole life. And then there was the abdication of her uncle.

(9,898 posts)to realize, or have learned, what a massive upset it was when King WhatsHisName (sorry, senior moment) abdicated to marry Wallis Simpson. That was a BIG DEAL over and above the Wallis Simpson element. They did take that stuff seriously at the time. Queen Elizabeth was just a girl then, so was probably doubly impressionable when her entire world was turned upside down.

(34,117 posts)Remember - Ruth Bader Ginsburg had pancreatic cancer for 11 years. A friend or mine is approaching the second anniversary of her diagnosis. (My friend's sister died months after her diagnosis with the same cancer).
So even though the average case is pretty aggressive, there are exceptions.

(34,117 posts)Hard to detect, and often too far along before it is discovered. My friend and her sister (also a friend) were diagnosed less than a year apart with the same cancer. One is alive - and still NED (no evidence of disease); the other died very quickly. So much depends on where it is located and how advanced it is when treatment starts.
And - it is one of the many cancers my daughter's chronic illnesses put her at greater risk for. So it's very personal for me.
FalloutShelter
(11,887 posts)I know treatment and detection have come a very v long way.

(81,527 posts)It seems so unfair. He's waited all his life to inherit the throne. And he's been faithful to his duty, his subjects, and his country. He's the King, so I would assume he has the best medical attention on the planet. I hope he serves for a long time. But cancer is singleminded.
God Save the King.

So, on the face of it, that isn't a harbinger. If they are actually activating some of teh planning, then yes, that is bad.

(101,390 posts)The King will begin next Tuesday with a symbolic trip to a cancer treatment centre.
His summer plans include a state visit, where he will host the Emperor and Empress of Japan.
In the coming weeks, the palace said, he would undertake more external engagements.

(5,008 posts)Did not pay attention to the source. They were open about everything at first but now will not even tell the type of cancer let alone the stage. I wonder if it is pancreatic cancer and they dont want to deal with the bleak outlook (by the media) for that type of cancer.
