Egyptian intelligence quietly changed the terms of a ceasefire proposal that Israel had already signed off on earlier this month, ultimately scuttling a deal that could have released Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners, and set a pathway to temporarily end the fighting in Gaza, according to three people familiar with the discussions.
The ceasefire agreement that Hamas ended up announcing on May 6 was not what the Qataris or the Americans believed had been submitted to Hamas for a potential final review, the sources said.
The changes made by Egyptian intelligence, the details of which have not been previously reported, led to a wave of anger and recrimination among officials from the US, Qatar and Israel, and left ceasefire talks at an impasse.
We were all duped, one of those sources told CNN.
CIA Director Bill Burns, who has spearheaded the American efforts to broker a ceasefire agreement, was in the region when word reached him that the Egyptians had changed the terms of the deal. Burns was angry and embarrassed, the same person said, believing it made him look like he wasnt in the loop or hadnt informed the Israelis of the changes.
It seems either Egypt is trying to sabotage efforts for a ceasefire or thought their duplicity would go unnoticed.
Now will anyone retract the condemnations made when Israel refused the "agreement" which we now have confirmation was not what they had agreed to?

It was never on Israel.

Conspicuously absent was that it is Egypt blocking the aid because they don't want to work with the Israelis. That was the reason Israel asked the PA to run the crossing. It's funny how we get two dozen OPs about cameras but none on what is happening with the aid.
I expect I will see a glacier in my backyard before my wait ends.

(9,238 posts)How when you put being critical of Israel and aiding Palestinians on a scale, criticizing Israel always wins.
Almost as if aid to Palestinians isn't perhaps maybe the highest priority here.
Perish the thought. Heaven forfend. God hurl a mountain from outer reaches of the universe in my direction for having such a thought.
That maybe - just maybe - the caring is - maybe! - somewhat - itty bitty - a lil bit - performative.
Maybe.

(19,486 posts)the truth is far less convenient.
We are seeing that neither getting a ceasefire nor securing the release of the hostages is much of a concern. Secondary goals at best.

(9,238 posts)People are currently obsessed about *checks* a camera.
So . . . probably want to wait until that's done before checking in on the ceasefire.
Which isn't really all that important. A ceasefire? Tch. Have you seen the camera situation? I've already cleared my schedule and have fresh pajamas in the dryer as we speak.
All hands on deck.

(9,238 posts)With important news about the ceasefire and aid, the breathless "OMG" anti-Israel story of today was . . . a camera.
Sometimes I just enjoy the lack of seriousness. Breaks things up a bit.
