(6,278 posts)'88 was the year he won seven primaries (notably Michigan, where I volunteered). He won a few in '84 as well but was more of a longshot then.
He did not run in '92 and so was not pitted against Clinton.

(62,266 posts)Jesse Jackson should've been the first black VP and then first black President had he and Gary Hart got a fair share of the delegates at the 1984 convention. He got 21% of the vote but only got 8% of the delegates. It was a disgrace. Between he and Gary Hart they had almost 3 million more votes.

PHOENIX (AP) Civil rights leaders, including the Revs. Jesse Jackson and William Barber, were among 39 people arrested Monday after refusing to leave the Phoenix office of Democratic U.S. Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, who has faced unrelenting pressure from liberal activists over her opposition to ending the filibuster to pass voting rights legislation.
Jackson, one of the nation's most prominent civil rights leaders, said the U.S. is in a civilization crisis with battle lines drawn," and he urged activists to fight nonviolently for their rights.
The powers in you, the people, Jackson said.

(57,013 posts)... day with him once for about ten minutes, one on one, in the kitchen of the Rainbow Coalition house in Chicago. Definitely felt I was in the presence of someone with good energy.
We were catering an event, and I was packing up in the kitchen. He had arrived late, and I offered to fix a plate for him. Can't remember what we said except it was light, and I couldn't believe it was him.

(947 posts)Here we have a sitting Democratic Senator...key word "Democratic".
And then we have a non-elected "Reverend"...(whatever that is...)
Whom to side with in this situation?
Let's review the last couple days here...
We have a giant thread on how evil Eric Clapton is because of his drunken racist remarks from the 70's...
Do we apply the same standard to Mr. Jackson and the whole "Hymie" and Hymietown" remarks from the '80's.?
Do we now think Mr. Jackson is as evil as Mr. Clapton and should not be forgiven for his remarks?
If not - why not? If so - why so?
It's interesting the dynamics of this place at times.

(74 posts)There are no changes to the dynamics.
Not for 53 years.

(947 posts)I did not compare Mr. Jackson to Mr. Clapton.
I compared the reaction HERE to the 2 stories...
I wish more posters would use their logic and intellect instead of letting their emotions dictate what they post...
We might actually get somewhere...
But then again, logic and truth are not important here... there was a time when it was - I miss those days.
