Russia warns of direct clash with West over Ukraine

Source: Reuters

MOSCOW (Reuters) -Russia said on Monday that U.S., British and French military support for Ukraine has pushed the world to the brink of a direct clash between the world's biggest nuclear powers that could end in catastrophe.

President Vladimir Putin's 2022 invasion of Ukraine has touched off the worst breakdown in relations between Russia and the West since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, according to Russian and U.S. diplomats.

Just two days after U.S. lawmakers approved billions of dollars in additional military aid to Ukraine, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the United States and NATO were obsessed with the idea of inflicting "strategic defeat" on Russia.

Lavrov said Western support for Ukraine was putting the United States and its allies on the verge of a direct military clash with Russia.

by a combination of the failure of Russian military to achieve its six-month combat objectives in two and a half years, as well as their political failures (using division to weaken western solidarity) resulting in the exact opposite of their expectations as Europe rallies to Ukraine's assistance.

He thinks that he can pull a Hitler and bluff his way to victory. We tried to pacificy dicatators in the past and we don't need to repeat that mistake.

Damn Putin and his threats. If he is going to initate a sequence that leads to nuclear annilation, so be it. We have had 80 years to purge nukes, but we haven't done it. Our civizilation has allowed it to happen and it will be our own damn fault and the rest of the Universe wouldn't even notice.

Ukraine's striking its military targets daily, sometimes many times a day.

Putin's repeated red lines don't scare the Ukrainians, and they're a lot closer to the action than you are, as are we elsewhere in Europe, so I don't get who "we" is supposed to be in this context. I doubt your life will be seriously impacted whatever happens.

Putin really, really doesn't want a clash with NATO, he knows, he's far outclassed by western weapons, tactics, manpower and leadership.

This is all bluster for his domestic audience and he's trying to scare the world, which, so far, has utterly failed.

Are the strategic rocket forces in any better state of repair than the Russian army, navy, and air forces?

In his 20+ years of "rebuilding" their forces after the post-Soviet collapse, he let corruption flourish as long as things looked good for the cameras. There were a couple of showboat units that could be paraded around for international PR purposes, but actual readiness for the bulk of them was an afterthought.

There's a reason why he won't let inspectors in, and it's certainly not to show off how strong he is. It's to hide how weak and in disrepair they are.

Yes Sergi, the good guys want to see the Russians defeated and driven from Ukraine, the
Russian People and the Russian Military rise up and take their country back, and a bullet to
Vlad’s brain pan is a good idea too. You have kidnapped, murdered, raped, and made homeless
probably over a million Ukrainian People have gotten killed at least1/4 of a million Russian
troops, civilians, sailors, and others too.

The only real question is which side the American Republicans will be on? Traitors that that
they are deserve shame and to be driven from government.

Depending on the website, Orc KIA range from 50,000 to 500,000. Of course the higher number is provided by Ukraine. The Ukraine estimate could be accurate, but it's likely somewhere in between. I wish there were a reliable source.

I've been watching this conflict on various platforms. It seems to me that, as in WW2, the Russian tactic seems to be to throw as much meat into a frontal assault as possible, thereby overwhelming those they are attacking. As that might have worked in the 1940's, military's around the world have become much more effective develop killing capabilities.

Where is the Russian Air Force? Where are all these hypersonic missiles? They're using 40-80 year old tanks. They're using Iranian drones. They're importing ammunition from North Korea for crying out loud.

I can imagine that even the Russian high command will act if the cost starts to outweigh the gains. For most of the Russian leaders since 1918, the end has not been pleasant. This is my hope for Vladdy.

I feel bad for the Russian people. They had a chance for real change during Gorbachev's tenure. But they needed guidance which they never really received after being told how to think for generations.

I write this with the knowledge that U.S. history has more than it's fair share of misdeeds. But the Holomodor? The Russian army's modus operandi purposefully attacking and destroying civilian infrastructure, the purposeful theft of children, purposeful rape, and purposeful outright murder of non-combatants is unforgiveable.

I'm glad frozen Russian assets will help fund Ukraine's defense. I'm glad to hear the age old Ukraini warning to invaders to please place sunflower seeds in your pockets before arriving in Ukraine. Prigozhin was on the right track. But he was only one of a long list of Russian oligarchs that have mysteriously died over the last four or five years.

I don't think Putler is going to stop at Ukraine.
