Biden campaign seizes on Trump Truth Social repost referencing "unified Reich"

Source: Axios

Updated 6 hours ago

A video reposted to former President Trump's Truth Social account on Monday discussing what would happen if he won the 2024 election referred to "a unified Reich."

Why it matters: Although Trump's campaign emphasized that this wasn't a campaign video and a staffer inadvertently reposted it without seeing the words, President Biden's campaign seized on it in a post to X, saying: "Trump posts a new ad foreshadowing a second Trump term that says he will create a 'UNIFIED REICH,' echoing Nazi Germany."

Context: The word "Reich" typically refers to German empires, though it's now largely associated with Adolf Hitler's Third Reich during Nazi Germany.

Driving the news: In the 30-second video that was posted on Trump's Truth Social account during his New York hush money trial's lunch break, a narrator discusses "what's next for America" if Trump wins as mock headlines and other text are displayed on the screen, including "the creation of a unified Reich."

  • AP first reported that the text in one of the headlines seemed to be taken verbatim from a Wikipedia entry on World War I that states "German industrial strength and production had significantly increased after 1871, driven by the creation of a unified Reich."
  • Other headlines in the video that was still posted on Trump's Truth Social account early Tuesday included "IT'S A LANDSLIDE! TRUMP WINS!!" At times the headlines echo the narrator's comments, including when the voice says "the economy booms."
  • Repeating the narrator's comments "the border is closed," text is displayed below the headline stating "15 MILLION ILLEGAL ALIENS DEPORTED" — in an apparent reference to Trump's plan for the mass deportation of undocumented migrants if he's elected.

    (Reuters) - Donald Trump has taken down a video posted to his Truth Social account that included reference to a "unified Reich" after President Joe Biden's campaign and others criticized the use of language often associated with the Nazi regime.

    The 30-second video, which was posted on Monday afternoon, was no longer available on the website by early morning on Tuesday. A person familiar with the matter confirmed the post had been removed from the site.

    The video portrayed a positive vision for the country should the Republican presidential candidate defeat Biden in November, featuring hypothetical newspaper headlines about a booming economy and a crackdown on immigration at the southern border.

    At two points in the video, text below a larger headline reads: "INDUSTRIAL STRENGTH SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASED... DRIVEN BY THE CREATION OF A UNIFIED REICH." The text is somewhat blurred, making it difficult to make out at first glance.

    Yeah, let's see how the economy does where you have no one to...

    Pick your produce;

    Process and distribute foods for your grocer shelves, from picking and canning tomatoes to animal slaughtering and packaging;

    Working in textile, chemical and paper processing plants;

    Construct and clean your buildings--residential, commercial, industrial;

    Make your clothes in sweatshops;

    Tend your children;

    And more!

    Yeah, that economy will be gangbusters!

    Inflation would be even worse with a mass deportation than during COVID, because if you think the supply chain took a hit in 2020-2021, just wait till you see what happens to it when there's nobody to do the work that keeps it running. Native-born citizens think they're too good for those jobs. They've only demonstrated it over and over again, even if you pay them 3X the minimum wage for the same work that immigrants did for under minimum wage.

    But, hey, if you want to pay $10 for a tomato, be my guest!
