Christie's political dance on Ebola: Moran
Given the unfounded panic over Ebola in the United States, its likely that Gov. Christie will score political points by taking the worlds toughest stance, and vowing to knock down anyone who stands in his way.
"The American public believes this is common sense and were not moving an inch, he said during a campaign swing through Florida. Our policy hasnt changed and our policy will not change."
This vow came shortly after a major policy change. And my guess is more changes are on the way, because the states rickety policy is still taking shape. Its an improvisation that will move with the political winds.
The first policy was indeed tough. It mandated that any traveler from the heart of the epidemic in Africa who was exposed to Ebola patient would face a mandatory quarantine for three weeks, for those who don't live nearby that meant a visit to a plastic bubble constructed at University Hospital in Newark, like it or not.
I don't believe when you're dealing with something as serious as this that we can count on a voluntary system, the governor said.
But the first and only occupant of the bubble, a nurse returning from the front lines, was released after a few days and sent home to Maine, where a court found there was no rational justification for a mandatory quarantine. Maybe the judge didnt fully appreciate the significance of the polls.
In any case, the nurse, Kaci Hickox, got out that bubble. Thats not moving an inch. Thats an about-face.
The governor explained: She hadnt had any symptoms for 24 hours and she tested negative for Ebola. So there was no reason to keep her.
Well, yeah. Which means that Christies three-week quarantine is overkill.
Thats what the Centers for Disease Control says. And the American Medical Association. And the American Hopspital Association. And the New England Journal of Medicine. And pretty much every medical expert except one lone Nobel prize laureate.
I cant go toe-to-toe with the Nobel laureate, Dr. Bruce Beutler. But the climate debate has proven that you could find an expert outlier to deny the existence of gravity if you look hard enough. Ill stick with the herd.
No one in the Christie administration mentioned the magic 24-hour rule until the political heat rose over the confinement of Hickox. She complained that the tent was cold, that she had no shower, that the screeners treated her like like a criminal. And she pointed out that someone like her, with no symptoms, presented no threat.
The governor said she was obviously ill and that she was served meals from the best restaurants in town. Hickox was never ill and still isnt. She got take-out from Kentucky Fried Chicken and Pizza Hut.

I'm pretty sure that there are better restaurants in Newark than Pizza Hut & KFC.
