1. I'm sure the insurgents have more sophisticated weapons.
Though most attacks are with improvised weapons, I think there must be many stores of old Soviet missiles and the like. I'm sure there is a certain strategy in play.

10. Never use your best stuff when the so-so stuff is working fine.
The Iraqis don't want to pick a conventional, stand-up, duke-
it-out-in-the-desert fight anyway. Just gets 'em blown up in large
numbers.

I would not be surprised if we see some better stuff for the
Handover of Sovereignty(tm) though.

I know what you mean by too quiet, I think our military has been forting up, not going out on patrol to avoid having to report more bad news.

But on the other hand, the "handover of sovereignty" is just 2 weeks away, and, according to fox news, the economy is booming.

Two GIs Killed in Attack on Base in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Iraq - A rocket slammed into a U.S. logistics base near the city of Balad Wednesday afternoon, killing two U.S. soldiers and wounding 21 people, the military said.

Fourteen of the injured were taken to the U.S. Army's 31st Combat Support Hospital and seven were treated at a clinic on the U.S. base, known as Camp Anaconda, according to a military statement.

Balad is 50 miles north of Baghdad.

8. We have a DUer headed for Anaconda
Posted here the other day asking about it. I didn't want to say that Anaconda - according to the records I've been keeping - is under fairly frequent rocket and mortar attack, and that quite a few of those attacks have killed servicepeople at Anaconda. This is just the latest successful strike by the insurgents on the Balad basecamp. Shite. I'm sure that relative to the overall population of the base, Anaconda is reasonably safe. Nevertheless, you better learn how to get to a bunker pretty damn quick if you're going to Balad.

17. I've been to anaconda many times
last year we were running missions there on almost a daily basis. The place was always coming under mortar attack at night. Usually, they were aiming for the fuel bag farm but it sounds like this attack was directed at the built up area on the East side. Lots of tents and soldiers there. I feel for these guys, Anaconda's a bad place to be, inside or outside the compound.

13. The troops are there to stay
Permanent US air bases costing billions of dollars are being completed all over Iraq. Neither chimp or Kerry has any intention of EVER leaving Iraq. In essence, the US owns will protects Iraq from now on. The public is slowly being made aware of the reality of this.

16. Oh shit. My brother - in - law is on that base
As someone else noted it gets mortared constantly. My brother - in - law said that the dining hall took a direct hit a couple of months ago; fortunately it happened between meals so the place was empty. If it had hit a few hours later when the hall was full there could have been a catastrophic loss of life.

But he still says he's going to vote for Bush, he has to support the commander - in - chief during war time.

31. I have to believe that was a typo
I've seen saigon post here for quite a while, and his consistent message is that no more troops should die. I'm sure he meant "I hope he doesn't get killed in the process..."

I'd be shocked to learn it wasn't a typo.

I don't want to get specific about what my brother - in - law does at Camp Anaconda but let's just say he's got a "leadership position" where he's highly likely to know exactly how many dead and wounded there were.

29. Three GIs Killed in Attack on Base in Iraq
BAGHDAD, Iraq - A rocket slammed into a U.S. logistics base near the city of Balad on Wednesday afternoon, killing three U.S. soldiers and wounding 25 people including a pair of civilians, the military said.

Two of the wounded were flown to Baghdad for treatment, according to a statement from the U.S. Army's 13th Corps Support Command, which occupies the sprawling base known as Camp Anaconda.

At least fourteen of the injured were taken to the U.S. Army's 31st Combat Support Hospital on the base and seven were treated at a separate clinic, according to a military statement.

Air and ground units responded to the attack, the military said. Balad is 50 miles north of Baghdad.

On June 6, a U.S. soldier on the same base was killed and another wounded in a mortar attack. Camp Anaconda was also the scene of a mortar attack last July 4 that wounded 18 U.S. soldiers.

At least fourteen of the injured were taken to the U.S. Army's 31st Combat Support Hospital on the base and seven were treated at a separate clinic, according to a military statement.

Does anyone know if they even count the "Independent Contractors?" Since this article says only 2 "civilians" the rest must have been a mix of "contractors" and soldiers.
