U.S. Military Denies Report of Saddam Exile Offer
U.S. Military Denies Report of Saddam Exile Offer

TIKRIT, Iraq (Reuters) - The U.S. military on Sunday denied a British media report that Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) had offered money and information on weapons of mass destruction in return for safe passage to the ex-Soviet republic of Belarus.

The Sunday Mirror newspaper said an aide of the fugitive (news - Y! TV) ex-president had approached U.S. forces in Tikrit and led them to a house in the suburbs. There, they were given a letter, purportedly handwritten by Saddam, proposing talks.

It said negotiations had been going on for nine days covering weaponry and bank accounts containing tens of millions of dollars.

Lt. Col. William MacDonald, spokesman for the U.S. Army's 4th Infantry Division which controls Tikrit north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, said the story was wrong.

Here is the Mirror UK report. http://www.sundaymirror.co.uk/news/news/content_objectid=13431908_method=full_siteid=106694_headline=-DESPERATE%2DSADDAM%2DOFFERS%2DAMERICANS%2DDEAL-name_page.html

I wonder why the story about the tiger being shot seemed related somehow to Bush and Saddam.

(From above article)

-SADDAM addressed the US president directly and gave him a possible get-out for a negotiated surrender. "There might be some who lied to you, but you believed those lies," he said, hinting that coalition intelligence was badly wrong.

-HE added: "If you want to discuss the withdrawal arrangements, some of the officials in the leadership arrested by your army ... you can contact them and hold a suitable dialogue."

"There might be some who lied to you", and "...hold a suitable dialogue" is found in the TAPE as reported here on 9/17/03:

IMO, The Mirror is twisting the info to spin for Blair and Bush. Other news agencies, such as the ones in Australia, and even one in China, have picked up on this cut and paste of source spin-o-rama reconstruction.

7. They actually DENIED it? How stupid can you be?
I don't know if it's true (we probably never will) but on Reuters and Yahoo?

Hey idiots don't comment on something you want to go away.

This tells me that there is something to this if they go out of their way to try to discredit it.

9. Indeed a "Light" Colonel is the lowest acceptable rank
Hey Bob get me a Lt.Colonel to refute this.

Well we have some Majors here who are primed as analysts for MSNBC or FOX...

No they say we need a Lt.Colonel get me one of those....

We have one but he's about to get his full bird.

No, one of the newer models.

Oh yeah we can get one of those if not we'll just make one of our Majors into a Lt. Colonel..

Okay whatever, just get me one..........

Again this is stupid. Denying it gives it weight.
