3. He is talking about vision
Edited on Mon Sep-08-03 10:21 AM by Bleachers7
I think he is going to run. "It's a good time for the US to have people in charge that understand ordinary people, the country, and it's principles that are willing to work hard. Doesn't matter if it is a senator, governor or general.

Happy to be a civilian and believes in civilian supremacy."

5. Well worth the listen
He sounds great - good good points - loved the point he has made, that there is danger of a one party government, and that some politicians are standing by the party instead of doing what is good for the country. There are factions saying that the other party is not patriotic nor virtuous and that we are the only party on that side. Clark says there are definatly Democratics as or more patriotic and religious as the other party and this is the wrong view.

35. saddam is gone?
is he not? isn't the country free of Saddam and his people? install the governing council as the legitimate ruling council, have them promise elections, get the UN to oversee the political process, and get out.

why should we build schools, bridges, roads, train their army, police, fire, etc., etc.?

we freed them, let them pick up the pieces and move on, get our kids home and allow the international community to oversee the political process, and allow the Iraqis to determine their own future..

65. Why not get out?
One of the reasons among a million, I felt we needed to stay out of Iraq was because, like Yogoslavia and the death of Tito, the removal of Saddam would create a situation ripe for a long, bloody civil war. Clark believed that with 40,000 US troops on Saddam's boarders, the inspectors plus their guards in country, and (important point here) NGO's simultaneously working to help repair the damage caused by the sanctions, Saddam would have been defanged while the seeds of a new government were being sown by the UN groups. Worth a try. That said, under the treaty we signed with the UN, we are responsible for Iraq because we are the occupying force. Leaving will mean civil war, ethnic cleansing and another treaty broken.

I agree with this last point because I do not wish more misery for Iraq. The Bushco should be in jail every remaining minute of their useless lives.

68. Donna, was it just Tito's death....
that created the civil war? Or was it to a greater extent Poppy Bush's administration pressuring Congress into passing the 1991 Foreign Operations Appropriations Act that facilitated the horrors? Forcing Yugoslavia to break up into separate republics (in order to qualify for financial help from the U.S.) could have allowed the ethnic enmities to spark. Maybe the neocons were already working back then to divide and conquer. Their philosophy is that no industrial nations should ever challenge U.S. leadership or have any regional role. This is the Wolfowitz/Libby thinking even prior to the PNAC. Could Yugoslavia's budding success appeared to challenge us in any way? Why else act to divide that nation?

I'm not for bringing back Saddham. I'm about tyring to catch up and learn as much as I can to make an informed decision. I brought up the issue of Clark and Yugoslavia in another thread. Not to rehash the rehash of his role at the end of the 90s. But rather to learn how Clark feels about our intervening in the socialist government of Yugoslavia in the first place. To me, this will tell me more about him than to hear how he feels about Bush and Iraq for the umpteenth time.

In other words, I'm ready for more in depth information about Clark. Was he supportive of the first Bush administration's actions or was Yugoslavia just like Iraq is now - we're in there now, so let's do what we have to do to clean it up. I want to know if he would have left Yugoslavia to it's own development back in the late '80s and throughout the '90s. To me, that's more important than how a general might feel about mopping up.

Btw, I'm a registered Dem.

I would have followed a different track in the first place - but we are over there now. Need to stop just threatening and work on developing positive relations with other countries. We need to get Osama and if we were not in Iraq we would have the resources to get OBL. They have reports of where he is hiding.

Diffuse the hostility towards the US by using the UN to be the mantle of a strong power.
