DNC slams Noem over 'horrifying' story about shooting her family's dog

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) on Friday slammed South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R) over a passage in her new book about shooting her family dog.
In a statement first shared with The Hill, the DNC called itself the Dogmocratic Party and gave its response in the voice of the dogs of the party.
As DNCs canine companions, weve heard a lot from our owners about just how extreme and dangerous Donald Trump and his far-right MAGA allies are but nothing could prepare us for the truly disturbing and horrifying passages Kristi Noem willingly chose to put in her new book, the statement said.
It continued, Our message is plain and simple: If you want elected officials who dont brag about brutally killing their pets as part of their self-promotional book tour, then listen to our owners and vote Democrat.

(405 posts)When children know a parent will execute a puppy for misbehaving, they know that parent is a danger to them as well. So, yes, it was animal cruelty, but it was also a twisted kind of child abuse.

(5,729 posts)I grew up in the absolute sticks of mid-central Flaw'duh (so remote five families used a nearby sinkhole as a trash dump that leached into the ground water we bore wells into, FFS) and that meant a lot of strays and abandoned animals. We adopted a few, but most wound up "encouraged to move on" or straight-up "put out of their misery" by my gun-humping older brother.
When I was 12 or 13, a starving mix-breed came to our place. She had a tag so we called the number, but the "owner" said he didn't want her because she wouldn't hunt. She was incredibly shy and sweet, so it was determined she could stay, but after a couple of days I noticed she didn't want anyone touching her muzzle, and ate carefully favoring one side. I finally coaxed her into letting me open her mouth, and the smell alone told me more than I wanted to know; several of her teeth had been knocked out and her broken jaw was gangrenous.
I just held her for an hour, knowing I had to tell my family but also knowing what would happen to her. The next day, while I was at school, my brother took her into the woods and shot her. Another call to the "owner" would confirm he had smashed her jaw with the butt of his rifle. I have never wanted to murder anyone in my entire life more than that bastard, and I hope he's burning in hell.

(933 posts)called re-homing if a pet is not a good match.
it happens sometimes and there are usually
well meaning people who will step up and care
instead of stooping low and ending a life. perhaps
re-homing is to big a word for her to master- so cruel
and dear_ prudence you are right about the message to her kids.

(10,131 posts)They're more than half a year old when they start.
A 14 month old 'hunting' dog would just have a few months training.

(1,858 posts)demonstrate how the dogs in the K9 unit are trained. He had a gorgeous GSD. He said until a K9 is 3 years old there is a strong possibility they will not follow commands even, if they have been taught those commands, and know what to do. He said until that point they are too high energy during their younger years, and get distracted too easily.
Dogs help save people's lives, but all that horrible excuse for a human KN wants to do is kill things. Sick psycho. I'd take the dog over her any day.

(10,131 posts)They're not perfect. They can get too excited. They can misbehave or make a mistake. etc.
Periodically, they would go back to 'school' for refresher training - throughout their lives.
To put a 14 month old dog down is at the very least: shear ignorance (based upon the accounts I've heard).

(565 posts)it was less than worthless as a hunting dog. What do they do in South Dakota with less than worthless governors?

(2,866 posts)but if we've got any users in that area, it might be worth a call to the Local Humane Society and/or ASPCA, as well as perhaps a few animal abuse letters to the editor in the states' newspapers. Make her feel the heat, if not for shame for fear of losing the damned election over this cruelty. And again, any person who would do this to an animal is one step away from doing it to a person. I'd be asking for protection services to check in on the kids to make sure they're not abused and/or neglected. They're at high risk with her.
I know there's a hell of a lot of bad crap going on here and worldwide... and a lot to be terrified over. This probably seems small beans to some. I'm not one of those. This -cannot- stand without an uproar... these animals have no voices but us! Wonder if Rachel Maddow has heard about this? She's an animal lover, too.

(20,232 posts)At least that's how the law treats them. You cannot kill another person's dog, but you can kill your own. You can't do anything that would be considered cruel though. But shooting your own animal is allowed.

(11,934 posts)been said that children who are cruel or kill animals, like pets or other peoples pets, often go on to be higher risk of hurting or killing people when they are older.

(42,022 posts)Shes an old lady nowalmost 14. I live in the city. Weve had her since she was 5 weeks old, as she came from an accidental litter, and her mama was too small to care for the pups further. When she was a young dog, my neighbors started keeping chickens and she got under the fence and killed at least two. We compensated the neighbor and made sure it didnt happen again. Reinforced the fence at the bottom where she dug through
Pipi, my dog, was so stinkin proud of herself, bringing us a pullet, feathers hanging out of her mouth. She thought she was doing what she was supposed to do.
Shes around chickens quite often now, my oldest daughter has a little farm, and leaves them alone
It never occurred to me to put her down. I would have rehomed her first.
I understand working dogs are working dogs, but that woman is an asshole. She didnt have to shoot the dog. There are always options. She chose to shoot the dog. Fucking lifted her rifle, aimed, and shoot a 14 month old puppy. Then bragged about it. No wonder shes a republican.

(129,886 posts)reminded me of that disgusting interview that Palin did with a backdrop of turkeys being slaughtered just behind her (presumably for Thanksgiving sales).
For those who have to kill livestock for food, it's one thing. But for those who try to "casually" showcase that killing (of anything) to create some kind of "tough" persona, that's sick.

(42,022 posts)The sad thing is, this will play out as tough and country to a lot of people, who are inclined that way in the first place.
On the other hand, the love of dogs is one of the things that disparete Americans can have in common. Overall, its not going to play well I think. As you say, the fact that she used this story for political gain is very, very sick.
