Real Time with Bill Maher (HBO) - 5/10/24

I apologize that there are so few "official" videos available, this practice by HBO appears to have started last month. If any are uploaded in the meantime, I'll definitely add them. But I wanted to share what's available before the "bootleg" videos are gone.

Israel Can't Win

Douglas Murray and Frank Bruni join Bill Maher to discuss the international community's double standard when it comes to Israel.

New Rule: Bill Maher DESTROYS the Media

Bill Maher provides a few rules of thumb for trying to follow the news in our modern age.

Overtime: Eric Schlosser, Douglas Murray, Frank Bruni

Bill and his guests continue their conversation after the show.

Here's a "bootleg" version of the show which includes the entire interview with Eric Schlosser, investigative journalist, author of The New York Times best seller Fast Food Nation, and stars in the documentary film Food, Inc (6:10); entire panel discussion with Frank Bruni, contributing writer at The New York Times and best-selling author, whose new book is called The Age of Grievance; and Douglas Murray, columnist for the New York Post and author of The New York Times best-selling book The War on the West (16:59); Bill's "funny bit" (30:39); and the opening part of New Rules (45:15). It won't last long, as usual:

I did like the Food person interview. Maher is not that good anymore.

I have yet to watch Overtime so I'm reserving judgment on the other two, but I'd never heard of any of them before so I have no frame of reference. For me, it depends on the guests, and I wish that they'd not only schedule guests that most of us have heard of, but also those who are informed and have a sense of humor - like those I've liked in the past - Rob Reiner, Max Brooks, Neil DeGrasse Tyson, Rachel Maddow and Malcolm Nance.

Great guests and meaningful discussion -- one of the best shows of the season. Thanks for posting, Rhiannon12866.

1. If the headlines in your preferred news outlet routinely feature words like "shreds", "destroys", "pummels", or "bashes", your outlet is a partisan piece of shit (either that or you're reading a Batman comic). Ditto with "obliterates", "roasts", "annihilates", and "owns".

2. Any news source that quotes "the internet" or writes "Twitter says" are a bunch of hacks too lazy to do journalism. You can pretend you wrote a piece on the zeitgeist, but what you really did was look on your phone and quote the three angriest people with the most time on their hands.

3. If your news outlet consistently reduces everything in the world to who the president in America is, get rid of it.

4. Once the news became a profit division of media companies, they stopped being in the news business and started being in the audience stroking business. The goal is no longer to inform opinion, it's to stoke them.

5. Never trust the initial reports. The media cares way more about being first than being right. They love a scoop, but it's always a scoop of shit, because it always turns out to be wrong.

I found Eric Schlosser to be interesting, we actually ended up watching Food, Inc. afterwards. Perhaps a bit dated (released in 2008) but I doubt not a lot has changed for the better in the food production industry. I try my best when shopping, and am admittedly somewhat of a hypocrite because although PETA is in our will, and I have very little red meat, I still enjoy chicken, and the convenience of buying the roasted ones at Sprouts. I guess my next step should be to check out the local food markets, where I have in the past purchased eggs.

And I thought Frank Bruni and Douglas Murray had a good back-and-forth.

All in all, another good one! (although the beautiful Ms. Zara opted out this week).

Thanks for posting!
