my mother used to do estate planning, and she met quite a number of people who insisted on making sure the government got as little as possible.

she would explain, well, we can put your money in triple tax-free municipal bonds, but they pay next to nothing. the government won't get anything, but neither will you. wouldn't you rather invest in something that nets you and your heirs more money after taxes?

"no! i don't want the damn gubmint getting any of my money"

"even if that means leaving less for your children!"

"that's right! just so long as the gubmint doesn't get any!"
