Sorry if this has already be posted ... every post about this story I've commented on (and been a few now) I've said UNLESS this story is BULLSHIT altogether.
Looks like the CIA (in a rare public statement) is indeed calling BULLSHIT ... INTERESTING!

(33,643 posts)The fact that NYT picked it up and seemed to report it as fact/verified gave addt'l weight to the story.
Honestly I'm not sure anymore what to believe on this whole mess ...

(6,709 posts)The New York Times and James Risen at The Intercept have reported it.
Pulitzer Prize winning James Risen--not the Dread Pirate Glenn Greenwald.
Risen, btw, has reported extensively on the CIA before, has written 2 books on the CIA (mostly Bush era), has had his reporting disputed by the CIA before, and has had said reporting supported by later release of documents. I doubt if the CIA views him fondly.
In short, they have more than one ax to grind. And they lie for a living.

(2,785 posts)I do not believe for one second the CIA was swindled in an effort to obtain damaging info on Trump. If anything just like most of the FBI most of the CIA probably favored Trump.

And this moment in history is a time for all sides to want to to control the narrative.

(6,709 posts)CIA is trying to control the narrative?
Russian Intel is trying to control the narrative?
NYT / James Risen are trying to control the narrative?
Only one of those three does not lie for a living. And this isn't their first rodeo.
I know who I am more likely to trust.

(6,916 posts)Be careful with Abramson.
Read Asha Rangappa, John Sipher, Just Security, and Lawfare. (Note Lawfare leans right, but they generally do a good job otherwise. Ignore the ex-Starr guy)

(9,589 posts)Why are so many Russians trying to protect Trump and his administration?
Why is Trump so ready to use any Russian operation against the CIA as if it is a benefit to the Trump administration?
Trump and his administration should be mad that this is being discussed publicly whether it is true or not true.

(6,916 posts)Dean baquet needs to rehire a real public editor now.
The US republic is at stake. We need a NY Times we can trust. They need to re-examine that Nov 16 story saying No Trump-Russia ties. And this story.
(After the president is out of office they can examine the Judith Miller/Rizen stories. Thats important. But it can wait a year or two.)
shanny
(6,709 posts)And in what way are you trying to tie him to the disgraced Judith Miller?

(6,916 posts)And how Risens stories calling WMD lies were suppressed by the NYT editors who put Miller on the front page.
I believe its in this article. But maybe the podcast with Scahill.

Risen also did a GREAT interview with Chris Lydons podcast on this topic.

(6,709 posts)I am just confused because your previous posts seem to indicate support for CIA over Risen, and then an apparent attempt to equate him with Miller.

(6,916 posts)You asked for the back story and I gave it to you.
The NYT has some problems. They do good work too. I wish Dean Baquet would fix the Times. Haberman's ties to the Kushner family, and the "No Russia-Trump" story are both huge.
