But, really, I think a lot of the corporate ticket-holders simply haven't bothered to come to the live venues because it's such a hassle getting there and through security.

Sure, there is probably interest from individuals on the ground who would like entry to these empty seats.

However, by and large, the vacant seats are a result of who the fu*k can afford to travel anymore?

the empty seats are "reserved" for members of the Olympic family and sponsors. Basically it's the best seats in the house being held for sponsors and VIP's from the IOC. Take a look at all the military folks sitting in primo spots now. The committee has asked them to volunteer as seat sitters, willing to leave at a moments notice but allowed in to sit. I don't know why they don't allow the public in on the action.

People in London have been clamoring for them to actually sell these seats but the LOC won't do it because it might piss off the crown prince of who gives a shit if he and his buddies actually decide to show up for a change.

There's not a chance in hell that an event like gymnastics wouldn't sell out if the seats were offered up for sale.

Oh, wait - these are also the people who get to drive in the special Olympic lanes, aren't they?

Any seat not occupied say 30 minutes after the event starts gets forfeited and resold (with a big discount) to whoever is at the front of the standby line. Problem solved.

I don't think it is new to any Olympics. They cost an arm and a leg, but you can buy them. Once again the Olympics do a lot of times have problems getting people in seats.
