2. I was just writing that at the ONE Place free speech is to be heralded and protected and

is the place where everybody makes their living off of it but somehow the speaker does NOT have that right?

3. Yes, the quasi-apology was . . .

a total cop out. During an evening where Freedom of Speech and the Press are honored, the very act of demurring to a bunch of serial liars and wannabe fascists is disgusting. The organizers of the event have learned NOTHING.

4. Here is the tweet text the OP forgot to include

The one thing no autocrat can tolerate, and this is especially true of our dime store Mussolini and his factotum, is to be Laughed at. Nothing cuts deeper than truth that pierces the lies and pretensions with laughter. Autocrats and their followers are always victims. Ask them.

The first amendment protects the right of speech. That includes comics, reporters and plain old everyday citizens. There is no right in America to not be offended. The WHCD should be a celebration of the first amendment and its absolute indispensability to the American republic.

Trump has debased his office, our institutions and our culture. His top staffers are his accomplices in that debasement. They are certainly not victims and media executives should show absolute fidelity to the free speech rights of a comic whose work stands on its own merits

7. Just curious, Bernardo, but why do you keep saying that?

The OP is an extract -- not just this one, but all the others I have seen you chastising in recent days. I don't mind reading more, but why do you feel the necessity to tell someone they've "forgotten" something?

What am I missing?

It's a reminder to posters that it is a kindness.

12. Similarly for me. But posted text also means I (and many readers) save time & might skip Twitter.

Because of my setting Twitter blanks out a lot of video, makes stills of others, turns animated gifs into stills, and disables links on its site. Sometimes (rarely) I will turn cookies on momentarily to see something there.

If a poster can take 60 seconds typing or enhancing a post and save 600 readers 6 seconds each then that one minute reaps one hour of reward.

24. You do a great service

Most people that have access to DU at work don't have access to Twitter, and it's very frustrating to not be able to read a tweet because it's blocked.

thank you!

5. As often is the case, Mark Twain was prescient

I use the last line as my sig line:

Will a day come when the race will detect the funniness of these juvenilities and laugh at them--and by laughing at them destroy them? For your race, in its poverty, has unquestionably one really effective weapon--laughter. Power, Money, Persuasion, Supplication, Persecution--these can lift at a colossal humbug,--push it a little-- crowd it a little--weaken it a little, century by century: but only Laughter can blow it to rags and atoms at a blast. Against the assault of Laughter nothing can stand.

14. I am a complete proponent of Free Speech.

However, folks need to understand that the 1st Amendment guarantee of 'free speech' means that the government can't prosecute you for speaking your mind. But... the right of free speech does NOT guarantee that there won't be repercussions form your 'free speech'. If you decide to cuss out your boss in front of co-workers, don't be surprised if you are fired. If you knowingly tell lies about someone you are subject to civil suits. If you play an on-line game and they decree no swearing and you decide to swear anyway, do go crying to your lawyer that your First Amendment rights have been violated.

And even if you are POTUS, the 1st Amendment won't protect you from defamation civil suits.

18. SS strikes me as the kind of Replublican with whom you can have respectful disagreement and debate.

From what I've read, he was genuinely chagrined and remorseful for what happened to America on his watch, so to speak. That being Sarah Palin, of course.

That he is starting to look like a liberal is more a matter of context and backdrop than a shift in his politics.

25. Not Disagreeing With schmidt, But

The more I read about the WHCD flap the more I think it is grossly overblown. Wolf has been mischaracterized on much of this, including the convoluted "joke" about Sanders remarkable skill in applying eye shadow. Indeed, I think some in the press are smarting, not because of the Sanders comment, but because she took the press behind the woodshed for their role in bringing us Trump in the first place. The Sanders comment was just a handy vehicle for getting back at Wolf - egos being what they are.

26. I think it's called poutrage

The feigning of outrage over some slight and pouting about it like a child. All, of course to deflect from what is really said. It’s from the urban dictionary.
