It'd seem to me that if one had teenage children, or even adults, and one was elected to a high position, you'd have a talk right away with all of them. Basically it would go something to the effect of the fact that the dumbest thing you could do is to announce that your parent is in a position of authority. The reactions can be various and many of them won't go well. The time for that announcement comes much later, and may be a very subtle form of communication. The smartest thing one can do is apologize and cooperate, and avoid immediate identification or association. In many cases, that's gonna make it vastly easier for people to make the issue "go away" quietly.
