Yes, the country is divided and although that division has played out along party lines, it is actually a division between those who want to lead the nation towards progress and the easily-led who will swallow any lie theyre told.
We have watched self-declared Christians abandon every tenet of their faith in order to worship a man who is the antithesis of Christian principles. We have watched in stunned disbelief as people rallied around a lying lecher who mocks the disabled, dismisses women as meat, and places himself and his co-conspirators as being above the law.
We have watched in horror as our countrymen praise an ignorant, self-serving idiot who insults our allies, places incompetent people in positions of power, and seeks to dismantle the institutions that educate our children, oversee the care of our veterans, and protect the environment.
There can be no compromise with those who not only refuse to recognize the rights of women, minorities and GLBTers, but aggressively work to take those rights away.
There can be no meeting of the minds between those who inform themselves with facts and the mindless who simply choose to ignore the truth.
There can be no meaningful discussion between decent citizens who cherish justice and the rule of law and those who support the blatant corruption of the Trump regime.
There can be no productive conversation between those who believe in our democracy and those who simply dont care if their pResident is a willing participant in allowing that democracy to be destroyed by our nations enemies.
There was a time when we looked across the aisle and saw caring people who, despite our political differences, shared our vision of a more perfect union. Now all we see is people who cheer as minorities are brutalized, as immigrants are demonized, and as their fellow citizens die from lack of healthcare, food and shelter. We see people who attack children for wanting their schools to be safe, and belittle even their own war heroes without hesitation. We see people who proudly demonstrate their bigotry, racism, misogyny and yes, even their own stupidity.
There is simply no common ground here no room for compromise, no reaching out across the chasm that separates those with common decency and those bereft of any sense of decency whatsoever.
The Grand Ol Party is no longer a political party its a collection of thieves who have stolen from the poor and middleclass in order to line the pockets of the wealthy. It is a group of corrupt traitors who dont care what happens to their country, so long as they make a buck out of contributing to its demise.
There is nothing left to be respected or admired nothing left of what was once the loyal opposition that has now proven beyond all doubt that their oft-touted Christianity, family values and moral rectitude has been shoved aside in order to embrace corruption, avarice and depraved indifference.
In the end, we the true patriots who love our country and the ideals it stands for will prevail. And when that happens, those who have sought to destroy those ideals through their self-imposed ignorance, their selfish greed, and their hypocrisy will be left to drown in the filth they now so enthusiastically wallow in.
In the interim, there will be no peace among us. Thanks to Donald Trump, we now know who is willing to uphold the principles we once all shared, and who is more than happy to embrace a pResident and an administration bent on the destruction of everything we ALL once held dear.
Now that we know who our real enemies are, we will not rest until they are defeated. And what happens to them as a consequence of that defeat is no longer worthy of our concern.

(1,900 posts)by our friends the Ferret (now blogging as Showercap) and the Rude Pundit, I truly look forward to the equally well written non-profane offerings of our collective conscience from Nance. Always striking at the heart of the matter and imminently quotable to those less amenable to earthiness, my hat is off to you. Some time at work over the next few days I will no doubt be sharing tidbits from your essay. Keep 'em coming.

Apathetic / sympathetic RW parents or simply poor and working two jobs no energy
Some tv or drug addicted all have less control
While each school have the young minds for +8 hrs x5 and a preacher on Sunday too can help solidify the ideology

(23,340 posts)I don't think Trump voters are a monolith, and many are not traditional Republicans. Trump barely won the election.
Our goal should be to find the most rational of those voters and to peel off enough to flip the House and the Senate.
Articulate the rational and compassionate values we believe in, and calmly and civilly point out how Trump, and Ryan, and McConnell fail those values. Speak to persuade. Don't declare war.
NanceGreggs
(27,813 posts)... that they are not open to persuasion.
They are not persuaded by actual facts - because they believe in "alternative facts".
They are not persuaded by the truth - because they believe the lies.
They are not persuaded by their Christianity - because they've kicked Christ and his teachings to the curb in order to worship Trump instead.
I am not interested in trying to persuade those who walk around with their fingers in their ears, blinders on their eyes, and Made in China MAGA hats on their empty heads while waiting for jobs that are never coming back, raises that their employers will never give them, and a cheque from Mexico to pay for a border wall that will never be built.

(23,340 posts)Most are voting for their perceived self-interest, and when Trump doesn't deliver there, they can be picked off.
Others, like the evangelicals, are dug in on the culture wars side, and are sticking with their tribe no matter what. We will never get those votes.
The only place of conquest is the ballot box. If we can't win there, we can't win the war.

(2,535 posts)I'm not reaching out to them any more. I've known people of their ilk all my life.
If they no longer feel emboldened, but abandoned by their chosen leader, they need to come to US with a humble admission that they were wrong. Doubt that's going to happen.

(53,410 posts)We are fools to try to reach out to them.
They wish the worst on us and the sooner we understand that the sooner we can get on with what needs to be done which is to get them out of power.

(18,581 posts)But I see the newest meme swallowed whole by Trumpbots involves a pic of Melania with her hand over her heart. The caption says "This is something you never saw Michelle Obama do".
Now how gullible and willfully ignorant would one have to be to believe all the times Ms Obama stood before the National Anthem she held her arms at her side and even Fox News ignored it? How bold would one have to be to assume no one would Google it? Incredibly, Snopes was compelled to debunk such an ridiculous claim:
https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/michelle-obama-anthem-heart/
This is the example set by Donald Trump who tells nonsensical lies that are easily discounted. He doesn't care that he's lying, and now his supporters don't care. We've crossed a line into the deeply surreal.

(2,577 posts)The Don is the logical end of what the Republicans have been morphing into for decades. Where they used to use subtle racist dog whistles, they now are out in the open with their hatred, greed, homophobia, and racism. Like you, I'm tired of being told I need to reach out to them, listen to their needs, and stop being such an "arrogant" liberal.
I am also tired of white evangelicals claiming the term "Christian." They aren't. They are white nationalists who happen to put crosses on the front of their meeting halls. I have heard the Rev. Dr. Barber describe them as followers of the "slaveholder religion."
There is no compromise with evil.

(13,941 posts)... unless you are expected or asked to serve. Not your blood or the blood of your loved ones will be spilled on the battlefields of war - only the very poor should have to suffer that indignity - but not the offspring of the well off or rich.
If a veteran needs help assimilating back in to society after serving and witnessing firsthand the atrocities of war - tell him to grab himself up by the bootstraps, join in on the miracles of capitalism, and soon he too will be a rich and comfortable man.
Because in reality taxpayer funded veterans programs for health care, educational opportunities, and housing programs are just too expensive a burden for the American taxpayer to bare and they think the welfare of veterans should not be their concern.

(582 posts)I am tired and so sick of it all. Any Trump supporters I have encountered know nothing about him. They are all willfully ignorant of what is going on and it makes me feel ill. Some are family members. I have asked them pointed questions about what is going on and they have no clue or desire to research anything. All they seem to know is that they hated Obama and Hillary. When I ask why, they do not even know. It is all so sad..... My hope is that the mid terms bring some change because I think we are in deep, deep trouble as a nation.
