Toomey, Merkley said their names were used to post opinions that are opposite of what they believe

Two U.S. senators this week called on the Federal Communications Commission to fix the agency’s system for accepting online comments after their names were used to post opinions about so-called net neutrality that they didn’t write or authorize.

The senators, Republican Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania and Democrat Jeff Merkley of Oregon, who have opposing views on net neutrality, said someone posted opinions on the FCC website that were opposite to what they believed.

“We were among those whose identities were misused to express viewpoints we do not hold,” the senators wrote in a letter Monday to FCC Chairman Ajit Pai. “We are writing to express our concerns about these fake comments and the need to identify and address fraudulent behavior in the rulemaking process.”

A Wall Street Journal investigation published in December found nearly 7,800 people who said comments in their names posted on public federal dockets at the FCC and other agencies were fakes.
