(5,591 posts)The media is still pandering to the freak reality show mentality and not delivering enough substance. (Like Rachel or Lawrence or Chris Hayes) And it isnt for lack of genuine topics for discussion.
Its too much of the same shallow stuff over and over.

(6,709 posts)No possible way to get 67 D Senators this year, and you know Rs will not help.
But I would proceed anyway and hand the GOPee all the rope it needs to hang themselves by supporting a criminal POTUS.
The charges will be exponentially more serious than Bill Clinton's "crime". Also, there will be other offenses uncovered that can be persued by state's AGs. A healthy dose of protests in support of impeachment would also be very helpful.

(2,540 posts)Exactly what trump wants him to do. Muddy the waters, confuse and distract. I wish the media would stop giving his lies airtime. It is a complete waste of time as they end up spent 2hrs refuting what he says in 5min.

(59,475 posts)His comments were incredibly amoral and cynical. He is essentially saying that the new Trump strategy is to lie and to smear Mueller, the DOJ and the FBI to discredit any negative finding. This because he wants to feed the RW lie machine that says Trump did nothing wrong and that the Obama administration greatly misused its power. This WOULD impact impeachment. Few legislators are "profiles in courage". If people who have voted for them call them in masse saying Trump was framed by the Obama/deep state, it will be impossible to get the 67 Senators - a daunting task in the first place.
This is despicable, but it shows that he (and likely Trump) actually fear that Mueller will continue to find illegal things done by people close to Trump ... and maybe to Trump. It also points to the alternative (RW) media was both a factor in getting to where we are and an ongoing danger.
Note that Giuliani is destroying any credibility he had left.

(14,483 posts)* that his voter base represents the will of all of America (because he won),
* that so long as his base is happy, he's doing all the right things, and
* that he should only listen to and be accountable to his voter base.
Therefore, if he claims his base is against Mr. Mueller's investigation or the thought of impeachment, then those things must be wrong.
But the truth is that Trump and right-wing media created this base of people and completely control their thinking, so it's theirs to own and the whole damned thing is a populist, circular illusion.

(59,475 posts)I agree that the re media created that base and it was big enough for Trump to win the nomination. It was also big enough that very few Republicans, who are not part of it, are willing to fight it or Trump. For party reasons, they support him.
Therefore, a third of the country, brainwashed by the right, control everything now.

(14,483 posts)If it were not for the billions that the wealthy pour into right-wing media and campaigns, the Republican party would collapse back to the Bob Dole-style tax-hating whining bunch it used to be. The global corporate world takes trillions of $$ out of our pockets each year as we buy goods and services, and then take the profits and turn those $$ against us and stab us in the back. Americans need to become aware of that process.
How to break their choke-hold on us? In the USA, I'm not sure it's possible without a total economic collapse and even with that, those bastards probably are hedged against it and have billions hidden off-shore.
In a rational world, we could conduct a general strike. However, because of what they've done to our system of banking and finance, Americans have very little in savings to brace themselves for any sort of serious action. About the best we seem to muster is a one or two day march, with little or no impact on the wealthy.
Winning back control of Congress only puts their game on hold for a while and just becomes a time for them to regroup and plan the next round of attacks on Democracy. It will take years of hard work just to repair the damage from tRump's administration, but the best thing we can hope for is a complete rewrite of our campaign finance laws. I do fear that by 2020, our healthcare system may be in quite a disastrous state. If we can win Congressional control, then fixing that and the immigration issues would keep us in power for quite a while.
Rant over and sorry to be so negative. I refuse to give up and I wish I had better answers......
