and most people seem to agree that he would have no power to pardon himself or anyone else of state crimes.

I am no expert but I am fairly sure that has been a consistent message. One reason why New York's AG is such an important player in the reality show called "Traitor Donny."

Additionally, he can't pardon himself in the case he's charged with tax evasion by a state.
