Judge: Florida election workers are "untrained" in signature matching
He gave voters until Saturday to correct discrepancies.
“Here, potentially thousands of voters have been deprived of the right to cast a legal vote — and have that vote counted — by an untrained canvassing board member based on an arbitrary determination that their respective signatures did not match,” wrote the judge, appointed to the federal bench in 2012 by then-President Barack Obama. "Such a violation of the right to vote cannot be undone. " My concern is that not all of those disenfranchised will have time to correct their votes in two days. https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2018/11/15/federal-judge-gives-florida-voters-until-saturday-correct-signature-problems-roiling-close-races/

1. Of course they are untrained.
The whole idea of signature matching is absurd. Anybody believes that people whose signatures supposedly don't match are actually voting for somebody else?

7. Exactly
What would be the motivation for someone to cast a vote in someone else's name? The risks surely outweigh any benefit.

16. Another Problem
Legally, if i show an ID to prove i'm me, and have someone with me to say i'm telling the truth, i could put an X on that line.
Now my voter card and my poll signature wouldn't even be close to the same, but it's legal. |

Blow up if you look at them twice!

4. I'm glad the judge recognized that people counting ballots are not handwriting experts.
This particular vote suppression scheme is especially noxious. Imagine a military guy comes back from a combat zone missing the hand he has always written with and is signing with the other hand. Grandma has a stroke and her signature changes. There are all kinds of reasons signatures don't match.

5. Signatures are different every time.
A bank teller one said my signature did not match. At the time I was holding a squirming toddler who was trying to escape. I just stood there and said “really” until she finally handed over my money.

8. I signed my dad's ballot in FL.
He has macular degeneration and cannot see. I so wonder if his was counted. He would be pissed if it wasn't.

15. In PA, the absentee ballot signature line allows for
the voter to make a mark and for a witness to sign verifying that it is the voter who signed. My parent has the same issue as your dad. When I apply for the absentee ballot, there's a section for the reason and I always put macular degeneration and loss of central vision.

11. This is not a mistake or an oversight this is one more way to suppress the vote.
And as noted up thread nobody is voting twice that shit doesn't happen.
I know I have done election work for years. It takes a lot of work to have so many random errors. Vote counting machines are over heating. https://www.democraticunderground.com/100211427825 Absentee ballots that were sent out too late so that people could vote and then mail them back in and have that ballot counted. https://www.democraticunderground.com/100211416264 NY Times: People voted for Governor but skipped voting for senator. Ballot design in Broward County is one possible cause of votes cast for one contest but apparently not another. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/09/upshot/florida-senate-race-broward-undercount.html |

18. signature matching is absurd on its face
signatures change - a elderly person whose hand shakes
will not have a consistent signature. My signature is different if my hand is cold or warm. The whole idea of using a scrawl to identify a person with so many other more dependable methods available is stupid. |
