smoking. My maternal grandmother and paternal grandfather both had emphysema. In 5th grade Science class, I did a report on black lung and the hazards of smoking. So it was right about that time that I started dissecting my parents cigarettes. I decided if they wouldn't stop smoking, they'd stop because they were losing money on the cartons of cigs I removed the tobacco from and repackaged. I tried to appeal to their sympathies, my grandmother (with emphysema) lived with us. They must not love us because they were choosing to hurt her and me.
Being a little witch paid off a bit. They stopped smoking around us, or took it behind the garage to do it in secret. My brother also smoked and my parents would try to pass it off as him smoking, but I could tell the difference between the smell of Winston and Kent, so I would lay into them about lying.
Come to think of it, I might have been a slightly difficult child to raise....
Not sure it would work re: the butterfly sanctuary since parents can't directly effect it. Kids could write letters and have their parents sign them and send them to their reps, but not sure what else they could do. It's definitely a subject that needs a plan.
