Ron DeSantis is slow-walking restoration of Florida voting rights

More than a million people in the state just regained the right to vote. Republicans are already busy trying to claw it back.

Florida’s Gov.-elect Ron DeSantis (R) is trying to undermine one of the most momentous progressive wins of the midterm election, after an estimated 1.4 million people had the right to vote restored when Amendment 4 passed last month. Nearly 65 percent of voters in the state approved the measure.

The amendment itself was simple: People convicted of a felony would have their voting rights restored after completing the terms of their sentence. The only exception would be for people convicted of murder or felony sexual assault.

But DeSantis told the Palm Beach Post late Wednesday that the measure shouldn’t go into effect as envisioned by the 5.2 million Floridians who voted for it. First, he said, the state’s lawmakers should pass “implementing language” in a separate bill that would require his signature before going into effect.

Florida’s legislature doesn’t meet for two months after Amendment 4’s scheduled implementation date, January 8 of next year.

“They’re going to be able to do that in March,” DeSantis said of passing implementation language. “There’s no way you can go through this session without implementing it.”

These right wing fuckers just don't like it when people pass a referendum from a democratic society............

So for next four years under this racist POS and his lackeys are going to do whatever it takes to just poke the voters of Florida in the eye.......................

Another DU member, soon after the elections, said that even though the Democrats had lost the governor and AG spots...that the one good thing that came out of it was Amendment 4!

I recall saying that it didn't matter and that the Republicans would make sure that the Amendment would never take affect as was intended by the people!!!

Republicans voted for that piece of shit to be governor (also voted for the resolution he plans to block) so fuck ‘em.

I’m becoming resolved to the fact that some states are irredeemable and most southern states are just shitholes because they want to be shitholes because they vote that way on purpose: see Mississippi.

I lived in FL as a kid and I had my honeymoon in the Keys but I will never go there again nor will anyone in my family and I take every opportunity to trash the state.

Republicans are going to destroy Florida’s beaches with oil slicks and red tides and the fear of getting shot by some gun nut and tourism will crash and FL will just be one more shithole sourthern state that no one goes to...screw them.

It’s just practical.

If FL is going to change than Floridians are going to have to change it. Cannot make them do it. Unfortunately, we (taxpayers in US) will have to all pay for oil slicks and red tides and deaths from it being legal to shoot whoever you want anytime you want (“stand your ground”- that is how many I know see it including anyone I talk to in Europe views it) and the resulting economic chaos that will result from that but nothing I say or do from another state is going to make a difference.

When it comes right down to it I’m tired of southern states electing republican governments that are running their states into the dirt, year after year, and the rest of us, especially western states, having to foot the bill for their ignorance and selfishness. It’s getting old, eventually the wayward cousin runs out of family members with a couch to surf.

Once again! We need to sweep out the scummy legislators in 2020 that vote to manipulate this amendment!
