Cenk Uygur criticizes advertisers for boycotting Tucker Carlson

Many advertisers boycotted the racist host for saying immigrants make the USA dirty.
Famous white males on Twitter don't seem happy about it.
Bernie Sanders supporter Cenk Uygur criticized the decision.
I think Cenk is aware that his good friend Glenn Greenwald is invited to the Tucker show very often.

6. Advertisers can do what they want, but this is more complicated than anybody coming here

to just say that its right and good when they do this. I actually think its really dangerous to not consider the slippery slope when advertisers make these decisions.

Consider how Youtube demonetization works. Also, what of efforts to make things like saying Israel should end the occupation of Gaza hate speech? e

And how do we feel about reactionary advertisers and broadcasters/papers dumping people like Maher for saying something mean about the way we fight wars, or Kathy Griffin, or Helen Thomas, or the more recent gut firing of Sam Seder that was luckily reversed?

Do you trust that Youtube, for instance, is using an approach that is better for broadening and deepening discourse, or worse for it? I say it makes it more vanilla and safe, and generates more content that doesn't rub in particular, big moneyed interests the wrong way, because Google can use the excuse that certain perspectives are just too dangerous and potentially offensive for advertizers to want to put their money behind. And of course advertisers went to Google and demanded this, so that excuse is even somewhat valid.

Now I don't fully agree with Cenk here because come on, he knows and has spoken to it many times, that the media isn't JUST deciding what the audience wants to hear and providing that for them...it is force-feeding the audience stuff that even when its ratings are dogshit, it sticks with, because it is generating a certain consent for certain ideas. Limbaugh was apparently a money-loser for a long ass time, but they "believed" in him....har har, so the revenue kep coming in. All kinds of right-wing media is a result of this, and thus it is available for viewership and incredibly ubiquitous, whereas left-wing voices rarely have a nickel of investor revenue to their name... even when they generate the viewership that TYT has.(yes, queue somebody to come and remind me about a one-time Roemer contribution).

So using consumer power as leverage against companies tacitly promoting hatred and divisiveness through advertising dollars is smart, and its something that big money actually listens to. I just appreciate that there's a double-edged sword here, and that the hand falls more heavily and easily in one direction than the other. It doesn't even take a whole boycot, it just a takes a letter by a few concerned citizens for corporations to react against progressives, and they just hide behind their need to protect their business.
