Could this shutdown last months? Years?
I was sure it would be over by now. People are really starting to hurt.
If Trump won't budge, are their legal means are available to force him to budge? Impeachment proceedings? What about an injunction? 25th amendment? This cannot be allowed to last much longer. Can Mueller order Trump to resume government, since this amounts to essentially obstruction of justice (funding of his investigation)? Can Pelosi declare an emergency and provide funding? I just can't believe that we are at the mercy of this man.

1. My fear is the only thing that will break the impasse is a tragic or catastrophic event
And it makes me shudder to think it may involve an air liner.

2. The goal is to inflict pain and gum up the works for as long as possible.
Then declare a perpetual state of emergency and force dictatorship. Much like what Turkey has done.
Will the GOP and SC allow it? |

4. The GOP could end this immediately by passing a veto-proof CR.
McConnell won't even allow a vote at this point though. Dems have said if a bogus state of emergency is declared they will sue which would go to SC.
It's really up to the GOP. |

5. how long would Vladimir Putin like to have our government shutdown last?
i'm going with months -- destabilize us too fast, and the instability might impact his profit margins. there's always the next budget cycle for his minions to work us over.
bonus round: how much would Vladimir Putin like us to spend on a southern border wall? |

6. Passing a veto-proof bill in both chambers to open the government would end the shutdown. Period.

7. No. It couldn't.
At some point, those people who are not being paid will no longer show up for work. At that point, our entire air transport industry will cease to operate.
I can guarantee that Congress will pass bills to restore payment to those workers, in numbers that are certain to override any veto. We simply have not reached that point yet. We will, if it is not solved in another way. |

9. Depends on how many industries you want to shut down
Air transport is the obvious first one to go, but there are others in line behind that one. |

Or even exists.

18. It's a figure of speech
It's "you" as "one". I had not actually imagined that the OP was, in fact, the person in charge of whether the government is shut down. But thank you for your comment. I was starting to miss you. |

10. months yes, years no.
At some point, things start to fall apart, the economy and stock market start really being affected, maybe flights stop happening, there's a whole list of bad things that are inevitable and the public will nearly unanimously say open up or else, and Republicans will be forced to pass a resolution with a veto-proof majority to open the government.
ONLY when the republicans fear the normals more than the Trump crazies will that happen though, and that probably does take months from now. |

None of this is going to be good for Trump and the GrOPers.

13. We'll see... the polls are showing a major impact on Trump and the GOP.
I think the GOP will only hold out for so long.
Lots of GOP Senate seats in potentially vulnerable spots. I have to think at some point they see their own electoral doom continuing this madness. |

15. It will end as soon as the air traffic controllers walk off in a mass sickout
They (and TSA agents) hold the key. Shut down air transport, including #TrumpCrimeFamily, and deals will be made immediately

17. I fear it might be up to Democrats in the house to be the adults and allow the G to open.
I think they can get a lot in return for the 5 billion for the wall. Possibly 5 billion in funds for social programs, DACA, etc. Its sad but this is serious and the Government will have to open eventually.
