(7,915 posts)Just a few years after the atrocities committed in Vietnam. Of course no leaders in this country will ever acknowledge or apologize for the actions commited in our name. Abrams is among the worst of them but now is in government again and will get to live out his life revered by some.

(82,849 posts)In case the name doesn't ring a bell (and, really, why should it?) Elliott Abrams was up to his beady little eyeballs in Iran/contra, even convicted in 1991 of withholding information from Congress, a plea deal misdemeanor that subsumed far more serious accusations. In the dead of night on Christmas Eve 1992, lame duck President George H.W. Bush pardoned Abrams and five others for their activities in Iran/contra.* Which freed up Abrams to get back into government during Bush the Stupider's administration, and claw his way higher during the Donald "only the best people" Trump administration.
Good on Rep. Omar for not forgetting Mr. Abrams' personal history.
*Surely you remember hearing about that during the necrogasm of coverage of Bush's death? Me neither.

(82,849 posts)George W. Bush also hired Abrams. "Under George W. Bush, he served as Deputy National Security Advisor for Global Democracy Strategy, Special Assistant to the President, and Senior Director on the National Security Council for Near East and North African Affairs." (H/t Council on Hemispheric Affairs)

(135,035 posts)'In particular, Omar questioned Abrams about whether he was still proud of dismissing accurate reports about the infamous El Mozote massacre that was carried out by American-trained troops in El Salvador in the 1980s.
More than 800 civilians, including children as young as two years old, were brutally murdered, Omar told him. During that massacre, some of those troops bragged about raping a 12-year-old girl before they killed her. You later said that the U.S. policy in El Salvador was a fabulous achievement. Do you still think so?
A visibly upset Abrams told Omar that it was a fabulous achievement that democracy came to El Salvador, but Omar wouldnt let him dodge the question and he eventually had to admit that he didnt think a mass killing conducted by American-trained forces was something to be proud of.'

Interesting how often that happens.

(276,038 posts)Great question. The US has fucked up our people for long enough.
Now they're kidnapping our children and putting them in cages and have the nerve to talk about democracy.
Fuck that shit.

I hope the committee investigations are handled more professionally.

(2,959 posts)I hope this is merely the start of a shining career for Rep Ilhan Omar, D, MN. since the subject received a presidential pardon he should be relegated to abject obscurity and the periphery of conservative holding cell "think tanks". I loathe him so much I can't use his name.
