TOKYO (AP) Plans for U.S. President Donald Trump to check out the ancient Japanese sport of sumo wrestling during a state visit are raising security issues for organizers.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is eager to have Trump and his wife, Melania, attend the final day of a 15-day tournament on May 26 and hand over a trophy to the winner.
The issue for organizers, Japanese media reports said Tuesday, is that more than 1,000 seats near the ring are generally sold out and buyers will all have to be checked in advance.
They may also have to ban the sale of canned beer in the front section, where Trump is expected to sit, the reports said.

(25,816 posts)because my dad was retiring from the USAF. My buddy Chuck and I had surfed
this area for years. His dad was a general, and my folks and his went out to
drink one night. Chuck and I stayed at the hotel. When they returned, quite
loaded, they had five sumo wrestlers in tow with their translator. Huge guys.
I thought the floor would break. One of them named Hasegawa was impressed by
me and Chuck, our surfing, and our muscles. Through the translator we arranged
to pick him up in the early AM and take him out to learn to surf.
He was hung over but went anyway. He needed a tandem board and we spent
a few hours getting him to stand on little waves. He fell and stepped on a
spinefish--we called them vana--hard painful spines imbedded in his foot.
He had to cancel his wrestling gig.

(25,816 posts)The drunken parents and the drunken sumos. Hasegawa was supposedly the
star. The pain from the spinefish could be alleviated by urinating on it.
It was difficult to tell him to pee on his foot as we spoke no Japanese and
he spoke no English. Great guy, very friendly.

(4,515 posts)I don't want to see his orange bloated face in the crowd. It's been a fun basho so far (Go, Tochinoshin!) and the Dotard being there on day 15 will sully it. At least he won't have the honor of seeing the mighty Hakuho. Sigh. Why does he have to ruin everything?
ETA: Handing out the cup??!!! Oh, HELL NO.

(37,130 posts)Anybody know what Japanese sumo fans think of that? It doesn't sound like something fans of any sport would want, much less one with as much tradition and ritual as sumo.
