Newly appointed SF archbishop arrested for DUI

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- The newly appointed archbishop of San Francisco was arrested for DUI over the weekend.

Police in San Diego say Bishop Salvatore Cordileone was arrested over the weekend for driving under the influence. Police say it happened in San Diego's College District just before 12:30 Saturday morning.

Bishop Cordileone is currently bishop of Oakland -- a post he's held since 2009. Last month Pope Benedict chose Bishop Cordileone to become archbishop of San Francisco -- replacing retiring Archbishop George Niederaur. He's scheduled to assume the new post in October.

Or do archbishops get a pass on DUI offenses? I'd think that the lawyers who specialized in DUI cases will be very interested in how this one goes. I'm sure they'll be watching to see if he gets normal treatment or special privileges.

Not nice, Monsignor. Not nice at all, Your Excellency. Perhaps a day or two in the county pokey will clear your head.

Some states i.e. Texas uses DWI - driving while intoxicated and others use DUI - driving under the influence - or something like that.

for DUI. Just because he's an archbishop doesn't mean he's above the law.

As a matter of fact, an example needs to be made out of him.

Well that's as may be, but it sounds like he had the belly of a drunkard over the weekend.

Let's see.... Ventrediubriaco? I think that's it. My Italian isn't so good...

Sorry, but everything about him screams "hypocrisy" to me.

Cordileone is considered to be theologically conservative. An opponent of same-sex marriage, he was one of the creators of Proposition 8 and once said, "Only one idea of marriage can stand...If that's going to be considered bigoted, we're going to see our rights being taken away–as is already happening."
