A WWII Tale...
Many years ago I read a series in the Times Sunday magazine about war veterans. The one story I will never forget is the GI who was fighting in the South Pacific and suddenly came face-to-face with a Japanese soldier. The soldier appeared to be unarmed, but was reaching into his coat, so our guy shot and killed him.
He went over to the dead soldier to see what he was looking for and found a picture, apparently of his wife and kids back in Japan. No gun, just that picture.
I can't forget just reading the story-- I can't imagine this guy carrying that memory for so many years.
