Washington CBS News has learned President Trump took a lot of heat from his family over the racist chants at a campaign rally in North Carolina on Wednesday. He heard from first lady Melania Trump, his daughter Ivanka and Vice President Mike Pence.
Mr. Trump on Thursday disavowed the chants of "send her back" and said he tried to stop it. "Well, number one, I think I did, I started speaking very quickly," he said.
But the video tells a different story. The president stands in silence for nearly 15 seconds, looking around the arena. When Mr. Trump resumed his speech, he made no mention of the chant, which started after he attacked Rep. Ilhan Omar. The rally left Republicans once again answering for the president.
CBS News learned that Mr. Trump spoke to several members of his inner circle about how to react to the chant. He weighed the pros and cons of softening his tone, worried supporters would not like it.

(22,145 posts)Super not interested in this propaganda unless any of those three is willing to give Trump heat publicly. Otherwise it's just people carrying tales to the media, and the media passing them on. No one in this administration is a "moderating influence" and we have to save ourselves.

Come out and say it in front of the corporate media.

(3,077 posts)By heat do you mean it was hot in the room? Or perhaps someone got heated that the chant didn't last long enough? This family is so full of shit. There is no compassion whatsoever. Fuck them.

(15,499 posts)Another version of the "we have to show some positive comment about this incident".
"worried supporters would not like it" - WTF??? It was his supporters doing the chanting! What sort of journalistic writing is this nonsense?
And we're supposed to believe that "I Really Don't Care Do U" porn star Melanie would stand up to him and tell him to stop? Or his empty-headed, plastic daughter?
Trump supporters may be gullible, but the rest of us aren't. We're not buying this story.

(16,646 posts)I think that was a reference to Trump being worried that soften his tone or trying to walk back the chants wouldn't go over well with his base. At least that was the way I read it at first.
Good, crisp writing has disappeared in modern journalism. Journalists used to come out of a liberal arts/literary education and were well trained in writing. There were also large numbers of editors to enforce "style guides" on the writing. In this age of "communication majors" and talking heads, most of this has been lost.

(15,499 posts)I agree with you about how writing is taught to students studying journalism today vs. how it was taught years ago. When I worked at a university, my office was almost across from the communications/journalism classroom, and I was always appalled at how they taught their subject matter.

(16,646 posts)I feel like the old guy hollering at the kids. When I listen to the radio, or on TV, and hear these commentators speak, I just wanna yell at them. These are professional speakers and journalists, and they form the most disjointed sentences. They abuse pronouns left and right.
Heard one this morning. "It's not that they were wrong, it is just that they weren't right yet." I suppose they thought they were being colorful or playful or something. Maybe they thought it was a play on words somehow. All I was left with was the idea that they didn't know the word "premature".

Trying to get some positive press to soothe any of them that might still be willing to support this atrocity.
They have no concern. Otherwise they would do more to put a stop to this abomination. They all want the same thing he does. Money and power and don't care how many people get hurt in the process.
