Did we ever find out why Rand Paul's neighbor actually beat his ass?

That's one of those things I filed away to look back on at some point but I don't see any reporting.

Rand Paul, a man with some seriously kinky shit in his portfolio, wants us to believe that his neighbor snuck up on him and beat his ass senseless because of.... how Rand was trimming his topiaries.

I think I speak for most of us when I say that is just not what makes one grown man beat the hell out of another. Did we ever find out what was actually going on there? Aqua Buddha 2?

The Bizarre True Story of the Neighborhood Scuffle That Left Rand Paul with Six Broken Ribs
How did a United States senator—just out mowing his lawn—wind up in an altercation that put him in the hospital? Was it a politically motivated attack? Or was it something far more petty? To separate rumor from reality, Ben Schreckinger slipped inside Rand Paul’s gated Kentucky community, where the neighbors tried to help him solve one of the weirder political mysteries in years.

If it is possible for a man, as he's being hauled in front of a judge for his arraignment, to somehow still project an air of haughty superiority, well, that man would look like Rene Boucher did as he appeared in court just over a week ago.

A retired anesthesiologist, Boucher—who stands accused of a bizarre beating earlier this month that left his neighbor, the Kentucky senator Rand Paul, with six broken ribs—strode into the jammed courtroom wearing a well-pressed blue suit. His back was ramrod straight, his head was held high, his nose not quite in the air. Seven other accused criminals who joined Boucher on the court's docket that morning had been schlepped to the courthouse from the adjoining county jail in orange jumpsuits.

Not Boucher. He'd stayed the night before at a friend's place—all the easier to comply with the court order requiring him to remain at least 200 feet away from his badly injured neighbor, whose house sits exactly 269 feet from Boucher's own.

A slight man, Boucher spent only a few moments inside the courtroom, enough time to approach the bench and plead not guilty to one count of misdemeanor assault. He and his lawyer then hustled toward the door, leaving behind them a pack of reporters and a still-lingering mystery: What exactly happened earlier this month in Rand Paul's yard, and why?

If Rand Paul was manhandling someone and violence was needed to stop then, OK. We don't beat people up for being an asshole.

... Rene Boucher, a 60-year-old retired doctor, pleaded guilty in March to one count of assaulting a member of Congress ...

... Boucher’s lawyers filed a 10-page memo that outlined the alleged events leading up to the ambush on Paul while he was doing yard work. They want to reiterate that the assault stemmed from a neighborly dispute, not a political fight. Paul’s neighbor claims the whole thing began with an “unsightly” pile of yard debris that he kept hauling away and even tried to incinerate — and that the lawmaker allegedly kept rebuilding.

Sen. Rand Paul’s office dismissed the characterization of an ongoing “yard dispute,” saying in a statement that any such description “justifies such violence and misses the point” ...

.... Boucher told the jury that he attacked Paul after watching the senator start forming a brush pile near their property line.

The day before the attack, Boucher said he had burned another brush pile that Paul had created near the boundary. He doused that pile with gasoline and set it on fire, Boucher said. An explosion burned his face, neck and arms, and Boucher said he was still in severe pain when he attacked Paul the next day. Boucher testified he had hauled away previous brush piles accumulated by Paul without asking the senator.

to do many more interesting and important things

And if everybody who thought I was an a-hole attacked me, I'd spend too much of my time defending myself

Since I all too often find that my attempts at friendly or courteous comments are interpreted as evidence that I am just one helluva big a-hole, I increasingly incline to the view that we humans frequently do not actually see our neighbors but merely see our own reflected projections: anyone, who sees everyone else as an a-hole , is very probably an a-hole

Now, I do think Paul is a real a-hole -- but I really try to keep the foregoing in mind while thinking so
