My birthday present ... very useful

Last edited Tue Dec 31, 2019, 11:19 AM - Edit history (1)

Some of my family asked what i wanted for my b-day (tomorrow) and
I said a new toilet would be nice. The old one leaked from the tank
into the bowl and it would clog up at almost nothing and so as i type
a plumber is putting a new one in. Don't tell me I don't live an exciting
life.

BTW I have put in @ least 6 to 10 toilets in my life but it is really nice
to watch somebody else do it for a change.

7. Feliz cumpleaos! Have a great day!

Paz.

Ps quite a bucket list you've got there.. tell you what, turn water valve off to stop leakage, then on to fill tank..that will buy you some time so you can enjoy your bday [no not a plumber but have had to change out a few few; btw they can be costly too.] Now for your bday... go out and have a great day, do something just for you. Again, happy bday!

12. Good for you! I hate installing toilets, and I've installed many of them.

It's a good job for someone else, I agree! Happy flushing!

13. Screeeeeech. You've been stopped by the grammar police here.

I'm citing you for not noticing that possibly your spell-correct switched "bowl" for "bowel". Yes that is awful if your old unit was leaking into your bowel! Gaaaaah! Uncertain how that is accomplished, uh, okay I'll shut up about that.
One of my old friends who has moved on to another plane shared this toilet humor with me when he was hospitalized:
He said he always wondered about that button on the wall in hospital bathrooms that says "push for help". "So if I push that does a hand come up from the toilet bowl and pull?"
If there is such a model invented, I'd buy one for Donald Trump.

16. Watching someone else replace our toilet I realized that I had ...

installed plenty enough in my life.

The first one I installed with my dad in about 1958.

It was brand new and was one of several he replaced in his rental properties.

The old one where we lived kept clogging and when we took it off there was a jar lid in it that was stuck and it would turn sometimes like a butterfly valve and clog and sometimes let everything go.

The new terlit started clogging almost immediately. After a couple of weeks of plunging and snaking with no no results, dad removed it, took it to the basement and got the mash hammer.

What he found was that during molding a big glob of clay had leaked through a mold seam and partially blocked the passage. It was located perfectly in the curve that it couldn't be seen from either end.

I learned a big lesson: if its broken you are allowed to break it. Learned a lot about mechanical things from that little experience.

18. The last one that I installed was just a pain in the ass

Despite trying to fix it a number of times the flapper in water tank would not close all the
way which caused a slow leak and some really big water bills and although it was cleaned out
it would clog with just a little t.p. and then I would have to use the snake and plunger for
@ least 10 to 15 minutes.

The plumber was great and it was great not having to go to Lowes in the Pick 'em up truck,
buying a new one, buying the bee's wax flange seal, draining and pulling the old toilet, breaking
up the old one to go into my trash dumpster, and installing the new one.

21. The only reason I didn't try to install this one was the tiler managed to break the flange ...

on the floor and I've had a very unpleasant experience with that before. So we got the plumber.

I'm done installing that kind of stuff. We've got a great plumber in town and he's reasonable enough I can keep the thrifty Scot inside of me from over estimating my skills and abilities and tempting me to do it myself.

17. Yeah, I stopped putting in toilets when I got in my sixties.

And yes, getting a new toilet is exciting! At least I think so.

Do stay away from the kind that have the pushbutton flush on the top of the tank. Those are real hard to get apart so you can replace the kit and so on.

Sorry, someone had to type it...

Plumbing is important; having someone else do it, twice as important!
Happy birthday from Grove City
