E. Jean Carroll fired from ELLE magazine following Trump rape allegation

By Gwen Aviles

E. Jean Carroll, a veteran advice columnist at ELLE magazine who last year accused President Donald Trump of raping her in the mid-1990s, said she was fired from her editorial position at the end of 2019 after nearly 30 years because of Trump's public debasement of her character.

“Because Trump ridiculed my reputation, laughed at my looks, & dragged me through the mud, after 26 years, ELLE fired me,” Carroll wrote on Twitter. “I don’t blame Elle. It was the great honor of my life writing ‘Ask E. Jean.’”

Carroll, 76, first discussed the sexual assault allegation in her 2019 book "What Do We Need Men For?" — an excerpt of which was published in New York magazine prior to its release last June. In that excerpt, the writer said that she was assaulted by Trump in a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room during a "colossal struggle."

Trump has not only repeatedly denied the allegation, but has also denied ever meeting Carroll. When presented with a picture in which they were both photographed at a 1987 party alongside Carroll’s former husband, John Johnson, Trump maintained that he had "no idea" who Carroll is.

They don't care about truth, integrity, morality, equality, compassion... The ones in my family have an inferiority complex. He's really King of the Losers. (I mean, except for the opportunists who are just trying to cynically cash out... and of course, they are losers in other way, anyway.)

thousands of times a day. There's terrible prejudice against older people, and the "lay offs" and "letting go's" start when people are in their 50's.

After 70 I guess you're just supposed to starve to death. They didn't let her go because of the rape...she's just "too old" and the younger people don't want to look at her. I've seen it too many times. It doesn't matter what kind of physical shape you're in, they don't want you around after you get above 50.

Then it is just bad for her and others who need those jobs but "age out" of them according to the younger bosses.

younger could get a good paying job and grow with it. The kids do not have a snowballs chance in hell at making it if us old farts stay in the job till we die at the job.

however, in this case, E. Jean was a specialty writer who was identified with her column, so her firing wasn't like just firing a routine worker who could be easily replaced with someone similar.

I don't doubt for a minute that red don exerted pressure on Elle to fire her.

My favorite writer these days, R. Eric Thomas, writes for them and I subscribed in support. I thought they were okay.

This seems like a stupid decision on Elle's part if true.

Look how long it took her to decide to charge Trump for rape? When she first came out with the story she wasn’t going to press charges. Probably because they had bantered a bit before he assaulted her in the dressing room.

She’s also said that was her last sexual encounter with any men, so it’s possible she blames herself, like so many women do.
