CENTCOM cancels all leave; USN orders ships to remain at sea for 14 days if recent port visits

Ryan Browne ✔@rabrowne75

.@CENTCOM-"US Central Command is taking multiple prudent measures to prevent the transmission of COVID-19 Coronavirus & to mitigate the operational risk such transmission would pose. One of those steps is to suspend leave & liberty for US service members within the @CENTCOM area"

Ryan Browne ✔@rabrowne75

The @USNavy has ordered all its vessels in the Pacific that have visited "countries with moderate or greater risk" of the Coronavirus "to remain at sea for at least 14 days before pulling into another port in order to monitor Sailors for any symptoms of the virus"

Update: A Navy spokesman tells me the instruction to self-quarantine for 14 days applies to all ships that have visited ALL countries in the Pacific region and not just those that have visited countries with moderate or greater risk of Coronavirus

if they're taking it seriously in light of the lack of leadership from the WH, its well worth paying attention. We've stocked up food so as to keep in the house as much as possible, JIC.

...if they haven't already. CENTCOM's Twitter account hasn't said anything yet about it, though. https://twitter.com/CENTCOM

CENTCOM suspends leave and liberty for troops over coronavirus fears

U.S. Central Command said Thursday it was suspending leave and liberty for troops and Defense Department civilian workers to and within its area of responsibility over fears related to the spread of the coronavirus.

“U.S. Central Command is taking multiple prudent measures to prevent the transmission of COVID-19 Coronavirus and to mitigate the operational risk such transmission would pose,” CENTCOM told Military Times in an emailed statement.

CENTCOM said in a memo obtained by Politico that official travel or leave outside the CENTCOM area of operations was not affected.

We cancelled so many of our scheduled port visits that we ended up pulling into the base at Guam 7 times instead.

When we finally got approval to visit Singapore, we had to go through a tunnel that took our temperatures as we passed.
