Would Going Golfing by Myself Be Safe?
I don't golf but my hobby is close to golfing interaction wise.
There are at the most 10 people were I go flying RC Airplanes and they are pretty good at keeping distance.
Staying inside is getting depressing
Thx in advance for any input

(64,420 posts)No different than taking a walk by one's self. It's close contact that's to be avoided. If there's nobody else within dozens of yards or more, probably safer than going to the store. Still nitwits at the stores.

(58,785 posts)though not in specifically closed gathering places. Go exercise. Go golf for as long as you're allowed.
Florida's closing at midnight tomorrow. For as long as we stay here, my husband will be limited to fishing in our marsh pond since he would have to drive to a ramp for the locals lakes, river, coast, and I'm sure those won't be considered necessary destinations. Same for golf courses, I'm guessing, unless you're fortunate enough to have a private one in your back yard. I googled for prohibitions on recreational fishing per se and found nothing except in OR and WA, where spring salmon fishing is apparently a crowd activity.
Perhaps the orders, which will almost certainly be extended, will be loosened on extension.

I have run this scenario through many times, but it's usually being spooked in the woods by a grizzly.
That and the Faces of Death series? I heard later even the alligator pit stuff was fake, but for the time, whoa!
Had to be that creepy voice.

(64,420 posts)My club is closed, but as members we can still go walk it.
With MS, I can't walk 18 holes. So I walked 5, and that green is right by the parking lot.
If I actually putted the ball in, instead of pucking up a 10" putt, I just used sanitizer on the hand I used to take the ball out.
Your point is important, but there are easy ways to stay safe.

(64,420 posts)We play gimmes. That's not Trump golf. It's rapid golf.
Trump calls a 5 footer a gimme. We call a less than 12" putt a gimme. Besides, getting out safely is more important than score or strict adherence to the rules.
I only played 5 holes, cuz I can't walk 18. The MS doesn't bother me except for leg fatigue. I could walk 18 for sure, but carrying the 20 pounds of bag and clubs.
Clubhouse is closed. Only saw the super cutting greens yesterday. The gang I normally play with was done & gone by the time I went. And I'm not going every day. Just twice since the stay home started, and one of those I just chipped & putted.

(1,081 posts)and on my course they cut one of those water noodles about 6" high and wrapped it around the pin and then stuffed it in the hole so it was about an 1 1/2" above the cup. It worked well and there was no reason to touch the flag stick.
It was the first time I've golfed in North Dakota in the month of March, today it's snowing!

(12,904 posts)Mostly singles or pairs. Most of them are walking, but a few of the older guys are driving carts alone. They seem to be practicing physical distancing. If I had extra, I would put some sanitizing wipes out there. Theyre good neighbors, for the most part.
Seems as though golfing exercise would do more good than harm. I say go for it!

(21,921 posts)Many courses are cutting the hole and leaving part of the cup above the level of the ground. Local rules say if you hit the cup, the putt is good. It keeps people from touching the cup.

(58,440 posts)as has been said, golfing is a sport where social distancing actually works, mostly. Hell, with my swing, I was seldom within 30 yards of my fellow golfers after leaving the tee box anyway.
RC planes might be similar.

Way(!) Into RC flying.
He had planes with 8' wingspan. He never drove a van until he got into the big models.
One of his models was a wingover (like Lindbergh's plane). Wings come off, but they're still 8 fett long.
Couldn't get those into his Carolla.
So, he bought a Chrysler T&C. Now, that's dedication to a hobby.
BTW: he was a controls engineer so he even built his own control equipment.
I told you he was way into it!

(90,225 posts)... turbines.
I have a business selling the electric jets to show people that we don't need gas turbines to push large 7 - 11 foot scale fighter jets and that electricity can do such on a large and small scale with some caveats.
Only people who've seen such believe it though, it's like some can't conceive the large 8 - 12 foot models being pushed with anything else but liquid fuel.
The rules in the US don't allow some areas to even have gas turbine RC models.
Kinda of addicted too but bought my vehicle long ago.
Thinking about getting a toy hauler bumper pull, the jet shows in the US where you go an show off the toys are amazing events.
They've nearly all been canceled though this year

I asked about golfing cause flying RC jets is very much like golf; no one wants to be around you when you fly.

(19,917 posts)The club has taken precautions like no cash, pull own receipt from register, door propped open so no contact there. They are still renting out carts but I'm a walker so no interest. Even though they wipe down the carts when returned, I don't think I would risk renting a cart or riding around with somebody else in one.
To prevent contact at the hole they have slipped a piece of foam tubing about half the height of the hole around the bottom of the pin so the ball goes in the hole but does not fall to the bottom. Ball can easily be picked up without touching anything else.
It was good to get out and get some exercise.

(21,921 posts)By its nature, golf creates social distancing most of the time. Right now, courses that are open will only allow one player per motor cart but many people walk instead.

I've often played at NY's Bethpage State Park where there are five championship courses. On one course, the Red, the 14th hole runs alongside the Polo Field where enthusiasts fly their RC planes. It's always and entertaining sideshow!
Good luck and be safe!
