https://talkingpointsmemo.com/news/coast-guard-cruise-ships-at-seaRedirecting the sick people to the flag country of the cruise ship is a particularly impressive bit of "fuck you".
For most of the South Floridas cruise ships, that means the Bahamas, where people are still recovering from last years hurricanes.
The rules, which apply to any vessel carrying more than 50 people, were issued in a March 29 safety bulletin signed by Coast Guard Rear Admiral E.C. Jones, whose district includes Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Puerto Rico.
More than two dozen cruise ships are either lined up at Port Miami and Port Everglades or waiting offshore, the Miami Herald reported. Most have only crew aboard, but several still carry passengers and are steaming toward South Florida ports. Carnival notified the SEC Tuesday that it has more than 6,000 passengers still at sea.

(14,225 posts)Certainly sick people and American citizens should be taken off the ships.
But these ships are flagged in other countries to avoid us regulations and labor laws.
They aren't flagged American, the companies that own them have foreign headquarters, and the crew's are largely foreign.
F the companies. Save the people. Seize the ships and convert them to hospitals. No bailouts.

(33,915 posts)They have been regularly reminded that they are not on a cruise, this is a rescue mission. (People currently on the ship were transferred from the Zaandam because they were healthy, older, and had inside cabins.)

(33,915 posts)She is one of the healthy ones who was transferred from the Zaandam. (Unfortunately, she is currently reporting that the person next to her in the cabin is coughing. They only asked about symptoms in the prior week when they moved people - I don't believe they even checked temperatures. That means both ships now may be infected.)
