First by his constant use of superlatives (great, tremendous, very very very good) to describe everything making those kinds of words so watered down as to be meaningless. Second because he is such a despicable lout that Ive run thru every negative descriptive word I know and have run out of terms severe enough to describe him.

(6,831 posts)that told us the first day -- "The use of the word 'very' must be supported by the remainder of the sentence. But it's overkill and I don't like to see it used. There are other, far more creative, ways to convey an abundance. And if I ever see the words "very, very" used in anything, you will fail this course.
I've never forgotten him. (Thank you Dr. Wonder, you made me a wordsmith.) Or that quote.

(6,831 posts)is "irregardless," which is not a word. It's "regardless" or "irrespective" to be correct.
I could give you a list of the mangling of the English language that makes me crackers, but it would wind around the block.
The late George Carlin did a wonderful bit of stand-up about how cretins, corporations and crackpots have placed words into our lexicon that DO NOT belong there.

(70,494 posts)* Infantile coinages instead of authentic words: "fake news" instead of distortion/propaganda/hyperbole, etc.
* Opposites: Name-calling others with descriptives that really apply to him - "disgraceful"
* Shaming/ridicule words
The overall effect of this degradation of language, as the O.P. says, is that their appropriate use is RUINED for us.
