Watching the last few minutes of Chris Hayes and trying not to vomit.

He is all into being "fair" and urging us to consider Ms Reade's accusation against Joe Biden as "serious" and "credible". We were told to expect a surge of smears against Joe and the Trump campaign has made no bones about that being their primary "strategy". I just never thought that Mr. Hayes would participate in the mud-slinging.

As I understand the accusation, it concerns supposed events in 1993 which, until recently, Ms Reade termed "harassment" if she spoke of them at all. She claims to have filed a complaint with the Senate, but she has no copy, the Senate has no record of it and three of the four people who she said could corroborate that she told them of the event have said they have no recollection of being told any such thing. And, just recently, when the "smear potential" of her accusation was recognized by right wing Trump operatives and she began getting more and more attention, her story changed from "harassment" to "he pinned me against a wall, reached under my clothing and penetrated me with his fingers".

THAT deserves national discussion in an effort to be "fair"?

Every such complaint deserves serious consideration, but that does not mean all such complainants deserve to be believed. Mr. Hayes is, IMHO, bending over backwards in order to be the "responsible adult in the room" but, in the process, is aiding and abetting the Hannity's and Ingram's of this world.

Pull your head out, Chris. When what you say makes Brad Parscale smile, it is time to reconsider your subject matter.

I noticed the accusation is being promoted by FOX, Mother Jones, Common Dreams, and Jacobin. The far right and the far left are on the same page.

we have the last 30 years

how sad that in this case it might not work to swiftboat another democrat and completely upend any sense of proportion or hypocrisy merely because of the cancer that's blowing up the biggest liar on the planet - limbaugh. in other words we will not avoid another swiftboating to elevate orange sack of shit over biden because dems and the left finally pulled their earbuds out of their asses and stopped getting their asses kicked by a few hundred russian fed limbaugh wannabes on 1500 radio stations, but rather by pure luck that the talk radio monopoly's leader may croak on his own. pure luck.

Reade's story before Sanders dropped out. Some probably still are, sort of like Hayes is doing by airing this scurrilous bs, and AOC did so last week as well, claiming they're being fair in considering it while ignoring all the constantly changing inconsistencies in her story.

a bizarre thing. Claims to be a Biden supporter but posted a link to the story on her Facebook and said he raped her friend.

Pretty sure this "Biden Supporter" is claiming that to try to get around the optics of actually being a Bernie supporter trying to ratfuck the democratic nominee.

Again though, taken as face value in what world is it believable that you would need to be reminded that the guy who was Vice President for 8 years and is the guy you claim to be supporting for PRESIDENT raped your friend once. That just seems like something you wouldn't forget about and need to be reminded. Interestingly enough, it seems that her brother had to be "reminded" of the rape as well. He first told reporters that she told him about Biden touching her shoulder or hair, basically the story she told last year.

Kirsten Gillibrand on Tara Reade allegation: 'I support Vice President Biden'

Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York has offered her support to presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden following accusations of alleged sexual assault by his former Senate aide, Tara Reade.

In a call with reporters on Tuesday, Gillibrand said she supports and stands by Biden.

"So when we say believe women, it's for this explicit intention of making sure there's space for all women to come forward to speak their truth, to be heard. And in this allegation, that is what Tara Reade has done," Gillibrand said.

"She has come forward, she has spoken, and they have done an investigation in several outlets. Those investigations, Vice President Biden has called for himself. Vice President Biden has vehemently denied these allegations and I support Vice President Biden."

...

Asked by reporters Tuesday, Gillibrand said she doesn't see a contradiction between how Democratic lawmakers are handling Reade's allegations and how they handled allegations levied against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh by Christine Blasey Ford in 2018, which Kavanaugh denied during congressional testimony.

"No, and I stand by Vice President Biden. He has devoted his life to supporting women and he has vehemently denied this allegation," the New York Democrat said.

attitude toward women for a couple decades and then changed her story completely for this election. Biden finger-raped her. (Where'd she get that idea?) He'd have to have been a lot faster than Trump, who reportedly lost way in trying to get through the panties.

And I see a man well known for his honesty and integrity, and for his lifelong support for all aspects of women's lives.

I also know that very few men do this. There's something wrong with those who do. What a coincidence for this strange woman who adores darling Vlad that the Democratic nominee for president is one of them

89. :) Can't help smiling, but yuck too. I turned off on The Onion

long ago. Good humor illuminates truth, but theirs is almost always extremely dishonest. People think they're supposed to give libel a pass because it's funny, as if humor makes up for character assassination and badly misleading people about who public figures are.

The video reminded me of a piece I read some time ago about an Onion writer of 19 years, so I went looking for it. He regretted creating the bumbling, vulgar Uncle Joe character -- but notably not because it was a very wrong thing to do or because he failed to depict a real person.

As he explained, they created a character who'd be "the sort of guy who’d wink and say, “Don’t let your meat loaf!” as a farewell" and would wash his trash-filledTrans Am shirtless in the White House driveway. Now, since Biden's running for president, he "regrets not taking him more seriously" and creating a very different, more sinister character. Gee, yeah, I'm sorry you missed that opportunity to depict him as a child molester also.

But he doesn't regret the scummy way he made a living for years, and it's obviously never occurred to him that the way his own mind twists might make him incapable of understanding and accurately depicting people of very different character from his. Even if he was interested in trying.

41. Seriously - Biden needs to file a defamation suit against Tara Reade immediately!

It's the only action that will help at this point. He must go on the offensive!

Also, I believe that Chris Hayes has been a big Bernie supporter, and for whatever reason, the people on the left who have been pushing the idea to take Tara Reade at her word have seemed to include a number of Bernie supporters:

along with Wikileaks weaponized DNC hacks etc. that saved Trump by discouraging Clinton's turnout.

48. The lives of thousands of Americans outweigh anything Ms. Reade could have to say.

We are in an existential crisis, with a mendacious, incompetent, corrupt malignant narcissist in the White House.

Biden is our only hope for a return to competent government and preservation of our democracy.

The stakes are just too high to entertain Ms. Reade's ever changing story.

56. TRUMP HAS OVER $250 MILLION IN CAMPAIGN MONEY

He hasn't spent a dime of it because the media--ALL OF THE MEDIA EVEN THE ONES THAT CLAIM THEY DON'T LIKE HIM are giving him free air time. they are keeping his name at the top of all news stories. he has plenty of $$$ to buy whatever influence he wants. This woman has changed her story at least 2 times but we are going to be forced to take her seriously because the media wants to support trump without showing it. They did this in 2016 with the help of russian operatives who are also involved in this made up scandal. watch what happens when no one pays attention to this shit. This woman's voice is going to get louder and louder with the help of foxnews, rush limpbaugh, and they are going to force the #metoo movement to do something too. So the best thing to do is to get it out there and crush while it. It won't help but to not do anything is worse---it didn't help hillary with the emails. ITS TIME TO WHIP UP ALL THESE TRUMP 23 ACCUSERS WHO HAVE YET TO GET THEIR DAY IN COURT.

76. Dems are in a conundrum here

The mantra has been "I believe the woman" when it comes to these allegations of harrassment and assault. The allegations against Franken were the perfect chance to recalibrate that stance, but instead he was forced out without any gathering of facts or congressional ethics investigation. Not all allegations are credible or believable and not all women are saints, but Dems painted themselves into a corner. The allegation against Biden doesn't seem very credible, but dismissing it will seem to many people as being hypocritical. Believe charges against Trump, but not against Biden.

Why did she not bring this up when Obama named Biden as his VP? For 8 years he was a heart beat away from the Presidency and she said nothing. why now?

The Orange One, and she could give a hoot about his tweets. I tried to like Ari, but his style irritated me even more than Tweety, and I've never watched Chris Hayes. Even when he used to fill in for Rachel, I found myself reaching for the remote, so this doesn't surprise me one bit.

84. I've tried to give journalists the benefit of the doubt

that they are not acting on bad faith. While Chris Hayes is obviously all in for Bernie, I will try to give him the benefit of the doubt too, but I feel like the media also has an obligation to report on some aspects of the account that are the most problematic, and I have not seen a lot of that. I think that many are uncomfortable with the idea of seeming to smear a woman-in some cases, it ends up being a rather performative display of lending more credibility to the charges than I feel like they deserve. And then some (yes, in left wing media like the Intercept and Current Affairs) are absolutely acting on bath faith with this, and have shown themselves to be actively manipulating things behind the scenes-Current Affairs reporter admitting to advising Tara and her brother who not to speak to/return comments to, talking to the brother before his story "clean up"-, etc. These are the people who are high on their own supply and clearly think that this is their chance to get Bernie in. Here are the things that I think the media who is trying to act in good faith should be clear about:

1.) The Biden camp has denied it, and has welcomed it to be investigated.

2.) The changed story from last year-Tara claims that she tried to get further into it with the newspaper and was "shut down"-however, don't reporters have an obligation to mention that she had said last year "I want to emphasize that it's not Biden himself", it's his staff, that this wasn't a story about sexual misconduct, and that she didn't consider the shoulder touching to be sexual but compared it/the experience to being a "lamp" that gets thrown away? Victims can incrementally tell their stories, but that is sure of a heck different than emphasizing specifically that the problem was not with Biden himself.

3.) I'd be willing to give, for purposes of this, the benefit of the doubt that Tara did have a negative experience in the workplace that she considered to be sexual harassment. She says that she filed a complaint with the non-partisan senate personnel office at the time (about sexual harassment and not assault). The Times investigated and hasn't been able to find it. In order for a complaint to be "disappeared" like this, you have to take a big leap of faith and assume that a conspiracy had occurred to remove this complaint from the records that somehow escaped the VP investigative vetting. I don't think that people fully grasp how thorough the VP vetting that occurs is. Hilariously, Ben Smith is suggesting that Biden release his "personal papers" from his time in the Senate, as if that would contain anything about a complaint.

4.) One thing that really bothers me about all of the neighbor corroboration reporting from this week is that it is described as independent corroboration. This neighbor was not included on the original list of people who the Times/Post reached out to, provided by Tara. Business Insider describes it as the first case of independent corroboration, and then (under the article paywall mind you), the article itself with the neighbor is a little weird. When the reporter asks how it came up, she said "Tara called me and said 'This Joe Biden thing is coming up again', and I said 'oh, that. I had forgotten about it'!" That just comes off as exquisitely strange for one-so is the neighbor saying that she didn't think this "would be such a big thing". How in the hell could someone forget something like that? I'm not sure that Tara calling the neighbor and "reminding" her about the incident that the neighbor had "forgotten" about should be considered exactly as independent corroboration. Then again, why would the neighbor lie? The neighbor says that she lives a quiet life. I will give her the benefit of the doubt that she can remember something that Tara told her about her time in DC, but I feel like you must literally suspend disbelief to "forget" about something like that when Joe Biden has been VP for eight years.

5.) Do reporters have an obligation to report that (not only does she seem to be a mere fan/supporter of Bernie) she appears to be a Bernie SUPER-fan? They sure seem to want to emphasize that the neighbor says that she will vote for Biden. Supporting Bernie does not make her story untrue, but it does seem a little strange to claim that you get your only news from your son and David Sirota. Furthermore, do reporters have an obligation to report on the "tick tock" tweet to Ryan Grim of the Intercept? Left wing Bernie twitter has been an ugly place. I will not say that it is representative of all of Bernie supporters of course, but his supporters literally had a different smear about Biden each week. He had dementia. He was sun downing. He secretly had COVID. He was too unhealthy to stand up at the debate. These were things that were repeated by David Sirota, who Tara supposedly "got all her news" from. This was a world that Tara must have been entrenched in. This does not mean that her account is untrue, but I think that it should be considered and disclosed.

85. THis is NOT a GOP smear job, it is a Left one

From a certain segment. The GOP are just gleefully running with it, but they are not to blame for pushing it. The certain segment literally admitted on twitter they are telling people what to say to make Biden look bad ie massaging stories. Literally high level Left folks of a certain candidate.

And, I am more left than any of them are so no, this isn't "red baiting." They suck, and are sociopathic bad losers (no, I do not mean Bernie is driving this).
