I think most women and some men can go for a while without a haircut. I have male pattern baldness, so if I let my hair grow out, I look like a hobo. And no, I don't want to shave my head.
BTW, my wife likes the longer hair.

(37,206 posts)over the weekend. She wanted to be sure that this would not become regular. It's short now....
But I'm good until the middle of June! At least.

(64,413 posts)I quit getting haircuts 15 months before I retired. I've been retired almost 17 months.
I use a trimmer to keep sideburns neat and straggler hairs on the temples under control.
I do have to say my ponytail is as long as my wife's now! It's around 9 inches long now.

(9,308 posts)to just knock it down a little so it didnt look so bad. Went in for a haircut yesterday though. Sorry but this haystack on my head was driving me crazy

(4,358 posts)but it was mid-back length and straight and I kept it in a pony tail or bun all the time so all I had to do was trim it in a straight(ish) line every six months or so. Now that I have it short again I wouldn't like to try.
Anyway there's no one around to see me so I'm not bothered. I'll get it cut again professionally when there's a vaccine.
Meanwhile, I've rediscovered headbands to keep my bangs out of my eyes.

(21,670 posts)to just buzz it down. But for women with short hair, that's a different story.

(33,915 posts)Now I just let it grow. It was chin-length in 2016. I can almost sit on it now. It's close to time to whack it off, again.

(14,270 posts)It looks passably fine too. My wife wanted to take some clippers to me but I balked because I had just seen a collection of haircuts gone wrong on Buzzfeed. I figured if there was a chance of follicle disaster, it would be better for our relationship if I was my own butcher.

(13,749 posts)When I was in my twenties friends persuaded me to accompany them to a hairdresser in an expensive suburb. The hairdresser combed my hair forward from a point on the crown of my head. He cut evenly, like a bowl cut, all the way arround. Pretty short. He combed it back and voila! A perfect hairdo. I can do that myself and have been for 50 years. I learned to be pretty good with hubby too. I do sympathize with those folks who have bigger challenges.

(21,589 posts)But its embarrassing when you go to a professional and they keep asking Who cut your hair? As they find all the mistakes
Im trying my husbands tomorrow and we tried our dog. Luckily the dog doesnt realize how ridiculous she looks. Im not very good at it but she was getting too tangled and had too many thorns every time we took a walk

(14,846 posts)It would be tough if I didn't just clip and shave it off, though.
Maybe you can try a "Flowbee" or something, if taking it all off isn't an option for you.

(3,282 posts)A few years back I noticed I have two spots that were very thin and I immediately started just shaving it all.
I just let my bread grow a bit and rock the bald look. Hair is just overrated.

Edit: And I always thought "comb overs" looked ridiculous!

(63,221 posts)means I can go for a while without a haircut. Also, it's just a lot easier than having to blow-dry it.
Yeehah
(4,520 posts)but I keep my hair pretty short.
I got some Wahl cordless clippers that I love. You can go outside anywhere to cut your hair. I just use a shorter comb on the sides and a longer comb on top and it works fairly well. I refuse to spend $15 or more for a haircut.
Nay
(12,051 posts)clippers, and never given a haircut, so I was nervous as hell. But his hair was driving him crazy.
It came out pretty well, if I must say so myself. Mr Nay was pleased. I took my time, tried not to buzz a landing strip on his head anywhere, and let him do his own eyebrows.
I'm letting my own hair grow out. It's usually kept short, so I've had to give up on the idea of my nice, sharp salon cut and just try to keep the bangs decent. I watched a video on YouTube and did an OK job.

(42,082 posts)It's okay for a trim.

(175,691 posts)It was unruly and badly tangled. It may not be quite even, but at least it looks some better. I also colored it and it looks okay.
Fortunately, my stylist is forgiving of do-it-yourself cuts.

(12,450 posts)I also shave the sides of my head myself.
I like my mowhawk. It's not a fan mowhawk it's spiky and layered kind of like a mullet Years ago I taught myself how to maintain my hair myself. I haven't been to a salon in decades.

I think the first one cost me $40... burnt it up after 10 years. The second one was more expensive. If I need another one I'll get the one for dogs... Same device but less money..Ha!
