(There are lots of very smart people doing fascinating work on cryptographic voting protocols. We should be funding and encouraging them, and doing all our elections with paper ballots until everyone currently working in that field has retired.)

No way to properly secure such systems. I speak as an expert with over 50 years experience. Another waste of money on systems with centralized points of vulnerability.

better than paper ballots. Print out the ballots with a box beside each name. Give each voter a pen and tell them to draw an x beside the names of the candidates they choose. Count the ballots by hand. We might not have the results for a day or two, but we'll be more certain of the results. We don't have to know the results on the night of the election. That has only been possible for the last 30-40 years, and it isn't necessary for our democracy.
