We've been down this route before - and our eyes have deceived us. In some of those instances, innocent people have been hurt by society's collective rush to judgment.

(Good thing in this case there don't appear to be any innocent people . . . but it would be nice to have actual confirmation.)

ETA: Apparently there is at least one innocent person who is the victim of mistaken identity:

46. Investigating a person's involvement in a terrorist group
Sat May 9, 2020, 06:04 PM

is different from running down a person and executing them on the street. No action was taken by local police on this February murder until a video was publicized to force action from the state government.

48. But the cumulative impact of asserting someone is involved in a terrorist group
Sat May 9, 2020, 06:24 PM
May 2020

***without investigation to determine it is true *** and helping an image go viral that perpetuates that assertion can contribute to persecution of people who have nothign to do with the terrorist group.

Remember this:

https://www.npr.org/sections/alltechconsidered/2017/08/17/543980653/kyle-quinn-hid-at-a-friend-s-house-after-being-misidentified-on-twitter-as-a-rac

The fact that the consequences of acting on a whim are likely less disastrous in htis case, because attending KKK rallies is pretty vile behavior, doesn't change the principle. Your suspicion needs to be some indicia of reliability before you act - especially if your acts have the potential for harmful consequences for others (like repeating viral rumors, or (at the extreme) killing them).

that end up with innocent people being stalked on the internet or in real life.

Although in this case - I guess both. I suppose there might be KKK members who don't advocate muder to further their racist agenda (so to be mistaken as an actual murder might damage his reputation), and it'a possible that the racist murderer is offended by the KKK (so mistaking him as a KKK member might damage his reputation).
