Los Angeles Mayor Garcetti requests National Guard to move in tonight at midnight . . .

CNN is reporting that LA Mayor Garcetti has requested the National Guard be mobilized tonight at midnight.

I remember when the Guard arrived in '92. It was in the afternoon, at about 4 pm. There'd been talk of them coming for over a day or so, as I recall, so it was expected. What was striking however was their method of arrival.

Large planes, troop carriers, came in over the Southland in succession, each plane swooping low and flying slow, circling over the entire land, making their presence known from the San Fernando Valley to Orange County. It was a visual statement of their power, a quiet intimidation that signaled a decided turn of events.

I wonder how the Guard will present itself this year.
