The U.S. Marine Corps on Friday ordered all public displays of the Confederate flag removed, a ban that extends to bumper stickers, clothing, mugs, posters and more.
The order directs Marine Corps commanders to find and remove displays of the flag in "work places, common-access areas, and public areas" on base.
"The Confederate battle flag has all too often been co-opted by violent extremist and racist groups whose divisive beliefs have no place in our Corps," a notice posted by the U.S. Marines on Twitter says. (emphasis is mine)
Comment: "Confederate flag co-opted by violent and extremist groups." Co-opted. What the fuck are they talking about? The confederacy was founded by racists and violent extremists.

(2,180 posts)They dropped the Rebel Pride theme in 2015 but bigots like to fly the older Ole Miss flag and claim innocence because it's just a college flag and shouldn't be offensive.
In my quiet coastal town, whiter than I'd like but supposedly liberal, I saw a car with that flag and followed it taking pictures that later were posted by others to Facebook groups.
Quite the conversations were had around that, including plenty of "get over it" comments.
Slowly but surely, the Marines and certain states and cities and colleges are getting the message.

(21,923 posts)It's the symbol of a lost cause. Why would anyone think there's something positive about that symbol?
The Confederacy acted treasonously against the United States. Its leaders were traitors who should have been charged, tried, convicted and then punished for their acts against the country. Those leaders never should have been idolized with statues and the like.
The concept that "the South shall rise again" is equally absurd. It suggests that the Confederate States will once again try to secede from the country whose Pledge of Allegiance says, "One nation, under God, indivisible..." Should they try, we Northerners might just let them go since they take more from our government than they contribute.
Good for the Marines.
