I have some suggestions. BTW, this post is
Fort Bragg change to Fort Tojo
Fort Lee change to Fort Grant (thats not so much sarcasm)
Fort Benning in GA to Fort W.T. Sherman
Fort Hood in TX to Fort Santa Anna
USMA at West Point to Benedict Arnold Military Academy
Only in America do we name Forts after defeated traitors to the Union.

(16,817 posts)I actually think FT Benning should be renamed FT WT Sherman, he earned that right.
Sherman A1
(38,958 posts)Should be named after William T. Sherman. It would only be appropriate.

(803 posts)He refused to allow black troops to serve in his army. At the end of the war his army was the only one of several Union armies that had no USCT regiments assigned to it.
Sherman A1
(38,958 posts)and there is no one without them. I however, much prefer the name of Fort William T. Sherman in the state of Georgia for all the reasons surrounding his march to the sea and his understanding of what was necessary to put an end to the insurrection.

(35,191 posts)Targeted food supplies for the civilian population, for instance, in order to make the women and children suffer--even starve--in order to undermine moral and support for the military.
"But it was commonly accepted that it was okay at the time" is precisely the moral relativism that's so condemned when used for other things. Doesn't mean people don't flip their morals as soon as it's a justification instead of a weapon.

(16,817 posts)My comment was in response to the OP. The fact that naming a Fort in Georgia after Sherman would piss off the "heritage not hate crowd" is what I'm referencing. I'm fully aware of the brutality of Sherman both during the civil war and in the following years with his brutality towards native tribes in the "cause" of western expansion. I'm not celebrating that in any way. However, keeping a post named after an unrepentant white supremacist and vocal firebrand for slavery, which Benning was, is a slap in the face to all people of color in Georgia and in the US Army who have to train at that facility. The point of the OP was it's sarcasm, unless you're cool with a Camp Tojo in California.

(101,715 posts)underappreciated among the best leaders and Presidents. I don't think it appropriate to include him in this context.

(35,148 posts)documentary the former southern traitors wrote the history on Grant. General Lee goes down as this great leader but Grant beat him. Lee was was traitor and a slave owner, Grant's family were abolitionists and Grant freed the one slave he had. Like Bill Barr said it depends on who writes history he is right on that one.

(35,148 posts)does Germany have a Fort Patton and does Japan have a Fort MacArthur? The memory of the southern traitors should have been buried with the Confederacy.

Re-name Ft Benning as Ft Patton.
Fort Bragg as Fort Bradley.
Fort Lee, VA as Fort Grant.

(23,283 posts)He went to school in Louisiana, so he sorta qualifies, and it would drive the Right nuts.
Yeah, he was born in GA, but went to LSU.
Yeah, he was/is a Marine, but if we don't tell him it's an Army post, he won't notice.
And, the name would drive the Right nuts.
