Trump has insulted his voters everyday he has been in office. He insults them every time he tweets.
Years ago when Trump said this, I could shoot somebody on 5th ave and my voters would not care. That was not a compliment. That was a bigly insult that went right over the Trump voters heads. He was saying he owned his voters.
Every lie, tweet, Trump has made was directed at his voters because he knows they are fools who will believe anything he says. They unconditionally dismiss any crazy act, statement Trump makes.
I could never have imagined millions of Americans could be insulted every fucking day by a lunatic and not notice.
The legacy of Trump voters is being written, it will be for all time and it will be strongly ugly.

(28,344 posts)If their silence means he's okay, then he's okay. After this, those people just fell in line. No minds of their own.
Add to Fox, Rush, etc that also acquiesced (remember in the very beginning, Trump was considered a crazy disaster) ... well, there you go.
It's all about not having minds of their own. Followers to their own detriment.
I'd feel sorry for them, but I don't. I do feel bad for all the rest of us, though. We get punished for their lack of will and critical thinking.
I said a long time ago that if the GOP stood up to Trump, the base would begin to follow. At least some of them. You know, peer pressure. Sounds so junior high schoolish.

(1,665 posts)Who hang around the bully at school, not caring that he insults them as long he insults others too and lets them join in.
As long as trump emboldens them to insult others (racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. ) theyll keep eating his excrement with a smile on their faces.

(4,522 posts)I see it in a lot of old high school guys I knew
Daddy spanked (and beat) the crap out of them
If not, psychologically abused them, didn't think they were "worth" anything, etc
It's classic authoritarian / abuser.
1) Daddy is never wrong
2) They must have "made" him do it
3) Daddy is just showing them how much he loves them.
Go to beginning: Daddy is never wrong

(724 posts)He holds nothing but absolute disdain for the public. He would never in a million years socialize with the people who vote for him. You're right that his behavior toward them is extremely insulting and shows complete disrespect. I believe that the people who still admire him are those who find his insults align with their own lack of self-respect.

(25,952 posts)I voted for him, and hes the one whos doing this [shutdown], Minton told Mazzei. I thought he was going to do good things. Hes not hurting the people he needs to be hurting. [snip]
This is not an accident. Trumps political victory and continuing appeal depend on a brand of politics that marginalizes and targets groups disliked by his supporters. Trump supporters dont so much love the Republican party as they hate Democrats, a phenomenon political scientists call negative partisanship. They like Trump not because he sells them on the GOP, but because they believe hell stick it to the Democrats harder than anyone else. [snip]
Antoine Banks, a political psychologist at the University of Maryland, wrote a book on the connection between anger as an emotion and racial politics. When politicians gin up anger, an emotion that necessarily has a negative target, voters tend to think about the world in more racial (and racist) terms. Trump makes his voters angry, he centers that anger on hated targets, and that makes them want to take his side.
This is what makes Trumpism work. This is the dark heart of our political moment. Even people who are tremendously vulnerable themselves, like Crystal Minton, support Trump because of his capacity to inflict pain on others they detest. The cruelty, as the Atlantics Adam Serwer says, is the point.
Sad and so ugly, but true. 😕

(14,558 posts)He didn't not do this to them, they have conditioned for decades by right wing propaganda:
1) They have relentlessly cast the evil liberal boogyman. This is the core element. There is this evil, hateful person out there that they have to rally around hating. Generalized and meant to include anyone not them.
2) They have had their pride stroked - you are the bestest christian and patriot. Only you love your country. You are all that is good and virtuous. And again, the evil liberal boogyman is godless, hates your country and immoral in every way.
3) Finally, you are a victim and under attack ... by the evil liberal boogyman.
These tones and messages are intended to program these people to believe that any means is justified in the battle against the liberal, and they would EAGERLY allow themselves to be disadvantaged economically, to have their health care be tenuous, etc. if they are told it hurts the liberal.
All of this was well in place before 45 came down the escalator. But, his master skill is knowing how to stoke the lesser instincts of others and took the whip from the republican party by more directly saying what they had for so long mealy mouthed around.
