The coronavirus surge is real, and it's everywhere (Axios)

Axios
Sam Baker, Andrew Witherspoon

The coronavirus pandemic is getting dramatically worse in almost every corner of the U.S.

The big picture: The U.S. today is getting closer to the worst-case scenario envisioned in the spring — a nationwide crisis, made worse by a vacuum of political leadership, threatening to overwhelm hospitals and spread out of control.

Nationwide, cases are up 30% compared to the beginning of this month, and dramatically worsening outbreaks in several states are beginning to strain hospital capacity — the same concern that prompted the nationwide lockdown in the first place.

This is the grimmest map in the eight weeks since Axios began tracking the change in new cases in every state.

3. And when you have the president of the United States talking about this

crisis in the past tense, and saying we are now in the Post-COVID era... it is absolutely insane.

Having this particular "leader" at this moment in history makes everything so much worse.

2. Headline A Little Misleading

The map shows 19 states flat or decreasing, including some high population states.
Now, it's definitely a concern, but "everywhere" is hyperbole, when at least 38% of states are not seeing increases of significance.
We'll see in a couple weeks though, as 2 states move to Phase 4 tomorrow.

Every once in a while Axios gets careless. I think it was a week or two ago that one of their reporters said Arizona's increasing cases were because of more testing but by that time most experts were saying it was not due to increased testing.

5. That Could Be True, Though

It was definitely true in Illinois.
Testing quintupled. Cases quintupled. But, then at that same rate of testing, cases fell. So, positivity rate fell from 14 to around 4. That was why Pritzker moved into Phase 3.
Testing up, cases up, but that was because the % of positives stayed the same (or got worse). We're now at 20,000-25,000 tests per day, but only around 500 new cases. So, 2-2.5%. It's flat, but way better than late March to early May.
Testing can make cases go up dramatically, but we need to keep our eyes on the positivity rate.
I checked yesterday. Arizona is at 10 since this began. Closer to 15 the last week.
Testing is NOT the reason there. It's way more people getting infected!

It is not much of a big deal in PA. PA has still been below 500 cases on most days. The testing rate was a bit low in PA, so more testing and a reconciliation of numbers seem to be the cause of the increase. We also have to carefully get SE PA into the green phase.

COVID is a very serious problem in too many states, however.

18. 579 new cases today in PA

It could be the week of 300 cases was the outlier. Regardless, it is a minor spike and bears watching. So far Montgomery County’s numbers remain good.

6. This is what happens under failure trump
Thu Jun 25, 2020, 06:02 AM

From pressuring Governors to reopen prematurely. Massive spreading of this active and deadly virus , even after his own experts warned him not to do it. This will prolong getting the economy back , and make it more dangerous to the people by allowing it to spread from his failed policies a lot more. trump is getting his ass kicked by this virus, and his toady Governors are looking pretty bad now for opening way too soon. Republicans are failing badly from this and I suspect the people will oust many of them soon for it, including Trump and McConnell , and others. Every day the virus is out there , and trump tweets or talks , it will only hurt all Republicans chances more. Trump has failed , and badly. trump will start threatening people to not report the cases and death numbers soon. The truth is trump, and the GOP's biggest enemy now.

increasing evidence that masking works and works well. So there are things that people of good will can do to protect ourselves and our loved ones.

We've got some tough times ahead. But masks are the way to go and if we can just get universal adoption then things can indeed get better rather quickly.

Definitely the best success stories in the nation. Wish other states would follow their lead. There is no excuse for the other states. NY and NJ were caught off guard due to a bad federal response.
