Polio.
Tell that to the republicans and their MAGAt cult.

(7,947 posts)Trump lied and said 99%.
And of course, since asymptomatic people are still contagious, it's actually dangerous to have a lot of people walking around thinking they're safe.

(3,489 posts)Our family was quarantined for 90 days. We couldnt leave the house, and groceries and homework had to be brought in. While we couldnt leave the house and werent crazy about it, we accepted it for what it was.
My brother was in bed for four months, could only get to the bathroom with us helping, then, like a bolt out of the blue, he got out of bed and walked into the kitchen as if nothing was wrong. It was an amazing recovery and he always attributed it to a miracle.
He wound up a starting QB on a winning high school football team and lived his life feeling like a very blessed person.

(3,489 posts)None of us did. We knew were at risk but our mom was an R.N. so we took all the precautions we could including frequent hand-washing and keeping our distance. Fortunately, we had a two story house with two bathrooms so that helped.

(32,356 posts)Once the vaccine was made available to everyone (affordable and widely available) it was no longer so scary. I think that happened in the mid-1950's. Thank you Doctor Jonas Salk!

(28,057 posts)It could also be mistaken for scarlet fever. I always found the latter interesting as when my mom was little she had scarlet fever but my grandmother always thought the doctor was wrong as she had never seen scarlet fever like mom's. All ended well and mom went in for another 80 years with no signs it was polio, but I do wonder about that.
